Homeless, Vets' Standoff in Humboldt County id JAA17116; Sat, 27 Sep 1997 09:35:32 -0400 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source: sananda@hotmail.com (Dr. Ruben Botello) in soc.history.war.vietnam Veterans' Stand-off in California Over 300 homeless men, women and children were given notice by the County of Humboldt (CA), to leave the unused federal property on the South Spit peninsula some of them have lived on for years, or be forcibly removed, Oct. 2 (next week). Protests are planned throughout this and the following week, while some of the disabled homeless war veterans on the Spit and their supporters are vowing to fight to their deaths for the rights they have earned, to live on the federal property. No one is permitted in or out of the federal property without an ID BRACELET identifying you as homeless and subject to the illegal eviction by the County of Humboldt. As everyone knows, local government cannot act as the "landlord" of federal property, and the federal government has never complained about the homeless living on the Spit. A Veterans Stand-Off is planned, Oct. 2, at the barricade the County of Humboldt has built, to block outsiders from helping the homeless on the Spit. Additionally, we are having a religious service, at the South Spit spiritual center, this Sunday, SEPT. 28, at 11 AM. People from all religions, faiths and creeds are invited to the spiritual gathering, to share our prayers, love and support for the South Spit homeless. Those of you who cannot attend are urged to help us in a mighty way by FAX protests ALL THIS WEEK, to the Humboldt County board of supervisors, at: 707-445-7299 AND by Phone Call protests, to ANN LINDSAY, the person who instigated this inhumane eviction, at: 707-822-7041. PLEASE LET THEM KNOW IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT YOU WILL HONOR AND SUPPORT THE GLOBAL ECONOMIC BOYCOTT OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY, UNTIL THIS MATTER IS SATISFACTORILY RESOLVED. For more information on the boycott, visit: http://members.tripod.com/~sananda/homeless/boycott0.html Thank you in advance for your kind consideration and support.
