Post to: streetkid-l@jbu.edu Streetkid-L Resource Page: http://www.jbu.edu/business/sk.html September 23, 1997 TO: Relatives, Friends and Supporters of the Homeless FROM: Dr. Ruben Botello, Founder American Homeless Society As you may know, Internet technology gives cybercitizens the opportunity, to make a great big difference in morally decaying world we live in. The homeless on the South Spit peninsula of Humboldt Harbor, in Humboldt County, California, urgently need your cyberaction, at this time. The county has given over 300 homeless men, women and children notice that if they are on the unused federal land, October 2 (next week), they will be forcibly removed, along with all their belongings. Most of the homeless have lived on the Spit for years, and the federal government has never complained, while the Stewart B. McKinney Act permits them to lawfully be there. The County of Humboldt has no legal authority to evict the homeless off the federal property, but local officials are notorious for trampling on homeless rights with impunity. HERE ARE THREE IMPORTANT WAYS YOU CAN HELP FROM YOUR CYBERSTATION: 1) Throughout this week, bombard the office of ANN LINDSAY, the doctor who instigated this unwarranted and inhumane mass eviction, with calls of protest, at 707-822-7041; 2) Throughout this week, bombard the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors with FAX letters of protest against the illegal eviction, to 707-445-7299, informing them you will support the Global Boycott of Humboldt County, until the five (5) county supervisors honor local homeless rights. (If you have no FAX, call them at 707-445-7509); 3) Share this CYBERCALL TO ACTION with your friends and colleagues on mailing lists, newsgroups and other channels throughout the World Wide Web, so local officials can feel the weight of a mass protest in cyberspace, too. We will be protesting throughout Eureka, starting tomorrow (9/24) through October 2, at least. If you take one or more of the above steps, this week, it will make a big difference for the besieged and beleaguered homeless of Humboldt County. We should never underestimate the power of the Internet, to make things right.
