NYC 10/12: Immigrants to March for Rights id PAA24988; Sat, 4 Oct 1997 15:02:47 -0400 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit ------------------------- Via Workers World News Service Reprinted from the October 9, 1997 issue of Workers World newspaper ------------------------- OCT. 12 IN NEW YORK: IMMIGRANTS TO MARCH FOR THEIR RIGHTS By John Catalinotto New York East Coast Latino and immigrant-rights groups have scheduled a protest march here for Oct. 12 to continue the new civil-rights movement for immigrants born in struggle a year ago. On Oct. 12, 1996, this movement showed its strength as tens of thousands of immigrants and their supporters marched in Washington. They demanded rights for the large working- class immigrant communities. Reactionary politicians in Washington and in key states like California have been whittling away the few rights immigrants had. That march was initiated on the West Coast by the Coordinadora `96, and a large participation of Mexicano and Chicano people reflected this origin. But there was also strong representation from the many immigrant communities on the East Coast. The East Coast groups that helped pull last year's march together have set a New York action for Oct. 12. It's a march from Columbus Circle to the United Nations. The coalition is demanding human and constitutional rights, equal opportunity and affirmative action, amnesty for undocumented immigrants and citizenship now, no more police brutality, a reform in the labor law, including an increase in the minimum wage to equal the cost of living, and an expansion of health services. While West Coast participation will be small compared to last year, organizers expect a strong delegation from Chicago. They also say that immigrants from South Asia-- India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, for example--will be joining in greater numbers than ever before. And immigrant leaders from all over the country will be coming to New York to ask for a solution to the crisis immigrants and poor people face in the United States today. The demonstrators will gather at 10 a.m. at Columbus Circle--59th Street and Central Park West in Manhattan. The demonstration is expected to end at 5 p.m. For more information or to endorse the march, readers can call (212) 505-0001. - END - (Copyright Workers World Service: Permission to reprint granted if source is cited.
