NYC Final Mayoral Debate: Picket Giuliani Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source:richie perez Fri, 24 Oct 1997 11:25:53 +0000 WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29TH, 6:00 PM Meet at: 66th St. & Broadway ***FINAL MAYORAL DEBATE*** We will be picketing and leafleting outside WABC-TV Studios. Our message and main chant:: JUSTICE DENIED - NY'S SHAME... GIULIANI IS TO BLAME Giuliani, his supporters, the NYPD, and the PBA are working hard to bury the issue of police brutality and police failure to protect people of color--to avoid bad publicity right before the election. A few examples: *Giuliani supporters worked behind the scenes to prevent a Congressional hearing on police brutality in NYC from being scheduled BEFORE the election. This has been confirmed to us by friends in Washington. JUSTICE DELAYED. *In the Baez civil case, the city's corporation counsel (which is part of Giuliani's cabinet), the Bronx DA, and the NYPD lawyers have been dragging their feet so that the trial does not begin before the election; and so that statements that the cops made the night Antony Baez was killed, revealing a cover-up, are not made public before the election. JUSTICE DELAYED. *In the criminal case against Livoti, found guilty of choking Stephen Resto in aother incident, PBA lawyers have stalled so that Livoti's sentencing was postponed until Nov. 7. (The sentencing was supposed to have taken place on Oct. 14. But then one of Livoti's two lawyers asked that it be postponed because the OTHER lawyer was unable to be there that day--although he knew about it weeks in advance.) JUSTICE DELAYED. *Two months ago, Giuliani signed a city council resolution promising Altagracia Mayi that a Queens street would be named after her son Manny, who was killed in a racial attack six years ago. The signing was covered extensively by the Spanish-language media. Since then, Mrs. Mayi has heard nothing from City Hall and her phone calls go unanswered. JUSTICE DELAYED. *Bronx police are refusing to release an artist's sketch of the leader of the white gang that attacked and beat Jovan Gonzalez in May. The gang used bats and pipes to break all the bones on the left side of Jovan's face. Pressure forced the DA to reopen the case, for a new detective to be assigned, and for a sketch to be done. But all movement on the case has recently ground to a halt. Jovan's family can't even get a copy of the sketch to circulate themselves. JUSTICE DELAYED. *The Louima case has virtually disappeared from public view. JUSTICE DELAYED. We believe the Mayor and the cops are dragging their feet on bias crimes and police brutality cases until after the election. JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED! We will be at the final mayoral debate to force the issue back on to the table and into the public's eye. We urge you to join us. Help us break the silence. Initiated by the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights, Parents Against Police Brutality, and the Anthony Baez Foundation.
