Can transgender cop return to work? id OAA11439; Wed, 1 Oct 1997 14:18:35 -0400 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source: Michael Novick Transsexual Hoboken cop on leave may have trouble rejoining force Associated Press, 09/29/97 17:12 HOBOKEN, N.J. (AP) - A police officer who got a sex change wants to come back to work, but the law might get in her way. Lt. Janet Aiello, a 25-year veteran formerly known as John, told Police Chief Carmen LaBruno she plans to return from extended sick leave by mid-October. But since she went on sick leave, Aiello moved from Bayonne to New York City. State law requires municipal officers to live in New Jersey, although they don't have to live in the city where they work. City attorney David Corrigan said Hoboken won't oppose Aiello's return as long as she follows the state statute. ``We're aware of the statute and we're going to let her know about it if she doesn't know about it,'' Corrigan said. ``And presumably, everything will be worked out.'' Reached in New York, Aiello, 47, declined comment to the Jersey Journal of Jersey City and referred questions to her attorneys. Her telephone number is not listed. Her attorney, Linda B. Kenny, did not immediately return a telephone message Monday. Earlier this year the city dismissed 45 charges it had filed against Aiello when she refused to attend special sensitivity training sessions to answer officers' questions about sexual orientation. A lawsuit Aiello filed against the city in 1995, claiming the sensitivity training was discriminatory, is still in mediation. Aiello began to take female hormones in 1993 and decided in February 1995 to go on sick leave to begin the ``real-life test,'' a yearlong experiment in living openly as a woman. Doctors require such a test before approving a sex change operation. She decided not to return after she was ordered to attend the training sessions. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. section 107, this material is distributed without profit or payment to those who have expressed a prior interest in receiving this information for non-profit research and educational purposes only.
