Annan Urges Mexico to Settle Chiapas Crisis

MEXICO CITY -- U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan
strongly urged the Mexican government and Zapatista
rebels to negotiate a peaceful settlement to a four-year
conflict in the impoverished southern state of Chiapas.

Speaking at the presidential residence Los Pinos after
meeting President Ernesto Zedillo, Annan also repeated
an earlier pledge that he would not mediate in the
troubled region unless requested to do so by the Mexican
government.
