Sandinistas Observe Revolutionary Victory over Somoza Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit July 19, 1998 Sandinistas Mark Anniversary Filed at 7:01 p.m. EDT By The Associated Press MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) -- The Sandinistas embattled leader threatened Sunday to reactivate rebel fighters if the government tries to roll back land reforms made following the 1979 revolution. The remarks by former president Daniel Ortega came during ceremonies marking the 19th anniversary of the entrance of rebel forces into Managua on July 19, 1979. ``We will reactivate the guerrilla commandos to fight for the conquests of the people,'' Ortega told a rally of about 10,000 Sandinista supporters at a downtown square. ``Let's hope (the government) does not force us to organize the Sandinista guerrilla commands in the mountains and the cities'' to defend the land grants, said Ortega, who has made similar threats in the past. President Arnoldo Aleman has claimed that some land reforms carried out under the 1979-1989 Sandinista government and a subsequent administration involved unfair land confiscations. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytcamer-07.19.98-19:47:12-19580
