(Reuters) - An explosion killed one person and injured at least one other Thursday at a Birmingham women's clinic that performs abortions, the local fire chief said. "We do have one confirmed fatality," Fire Chief Ray Brooks said. He said another injured person was taken to a hospital. "That individual is still alive," he said. Television station WRBC identified the injured person as a nurse who opened the clinic. The explosion occurred between 7:45 a.m. and 8 a.m. local time (8:45 a.m. and 9 a.m. EST) at the New Women's Health Clinic in the south side of downtown Birmingham, Pat Heaton, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said. The explosion blew out the windows and ripped away an awning on the two-floor brick building. The cause of the explosion was unknown. Witnesses were kept several blocks away in case of a second explosion. The neighborhood, including a nearby building on the University of Alabama, was evacuated. "In situations like this often there is a secondary device that we have to be concerned about," Brooks said. FBI spokesman Craig Dahle said he was unaware of any threats to the clinic. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytfem-01.29.98-12:14:53-15699
