Solidarity Among Women - Havana Conference 4/98 Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source - yankro@instjm.sld.cu Sat Jan 31 11:06:29 1998 MEETING OF SOLIDARITY AMONG WOMEN HAVANA, APRIL 13 TO 16, 1998 INTRODUCTION In the face of the polarization of the most powerful economic, political and military forces of the universe there is an increasing need of unity among the forces that represent the millions of women in the whole world which comprise the labour market, the ones who bear on their shoulders the maintenance of their children, the ones who face violence, the ones who struggle in demand of their rights. There has been a brutal increase of poverty as a result of the neoliberal policy and globalization, particularly affecting women and children. Tenths of millions of people in the world are deprived of essential human rights, from the right to life. In these particularly difficult moments, solidarity towards all people has a special connotation, with the sisters of the peoples of the world which live under truly critical situations and need the word, the extended hand, and the friendly action. Cuban women, jointly with their people, have given proof of the most firm will of resistance and action, not only to survive but to continue the struggle for development under the difficult circumstances created by the criminal blockade, imposed unilaterally by the government of the United States, for more than 35 years. Cuba is worthy of the recognition and international support that grows in the same measure that the blockade harshens with the adoption of measures which pretend to violate national sovereingty and ignore international law, as it occurs with the Helms-Burton Law. Due to these facts, the Women's International Democratic Federation (WIDF), the Continental Front for Women for a Life with Dignity and the Federation of Cuban Women, APPEAL To the organizations that struggle for the advancement of women, the popular womens movement, the feminist movement, other non-governmental organizations, academic and professional institutions engaged in gender studies, activists, whether women or men, that develop community work with a gender perspective, those who organized or not feel sensitized with the conditions of special vulnerability in which women live in the world, to all women that suffer economic, ethnic, racial or any sort of violence, to those who consider solidarity oriented towards women important and necessary, we appeal to participate in the "Meeting of Solidarity Among Women", for Equality, Development and Peace, which will take place in Havana City from the 13th to the 16th of April 1998.
