Dear Friends: We have just learned that on Thursday, June 10th the dreadful AGOA or "NAFTA for Africa" bill will come up for a vote before the House Committee on Ways and Means. This is the last opportunity to stop the bill before it goes to the House floor. This legislation is bad for the people of Africa and in the United States. As you know, AGOA would impose the most harmful conditionalities of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The Act, like many structural adjustment programs, would bankrupt local African enterprises, increase Africa's dependency on food imports, gut vitally needed social programs, reduce government expenditures on health and education, and widen the gap between the rich and poor. Attached is a list of the key members of the Ways and Means Committee. Please call as many of these legislators as you can and urge them to oppose "NAFTA for Africa" (H.R. 434) when it comes before the Ways and Means Committee on Thursday.
