Ordained in 1974, he later studied theology in Britain. He rose to the post of Archbishop of Cape Town in 1996. In this capacity, he has been a leader in raising the call for debt cancellation for impoverished countries, engaging high officials of international financial institutions in dialogue regarding issues of economic justice. Recently, he has been a forceful voice within the Anglican Communion for economic justice issues. He has played a key role in the reconciliation process in South Africa, where national elections were just held. "I have a dream.
