Victims of Industrial Pollution March on Tokyo

TOKYO, June 7, 1999 - More than 1,000 victims of diseases caused by
industrial pollution are calling on the government to step up measures
to prevent hazardous environmental pollution. The activists are
staging a two-day demonstration, beginning today, to stress their
points. Kyodo News reported that at least 200 organizations supporting
the victims are calling for the government to provide relief for
patients and for the courts to expedite lawsuits related to
pollution-based diseases. The activists have submitted a petition to
Environment Agency chief Kenji calling for the reconstruction of
polluted regions and measures to tackle dioxin pollution. The article
said the demonstration participants marched through rainy Tokyo today,
chanting the slogan, "Get rid of pollution, let's protect the earth's
environment."
