One thousand 500 delegates present in La Realidad

The second Encounter (gathering) of civil society and the EZLN 
got under way.

Dpa, San Cristobal de las Casas,Chis, May :  Approximately 1500 
delegates from different organizations of mexican civil society
met today in the community of La Realidad, Chiapas, with members
of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).

The zapatistas and the delegates, who will be in meetings until
Sunday, continue a dialogue that got started last November,
with the purpose of finding a way for peace in the region,
as they indicated.

One of the basic matters discussed , will be the results of the
National Consulta (plebiscite) that took place the past April 21
in the whole country and in which three million people participated,
who stated their support for the approval of the Indigenous Rights
and Culture Law.  

The Law promoted by the zapatistas, was written in 1996 by the
members of the Commission for Concordance and Peace (COCOPA),
made up of members of the legislature, that law was rejected by the
government after it was accepted by the EZLN.

As a consequence of that disagreement, the dialogue between the EZLN
and the government was suspended on September 2,1996.

The EZLN affirms that they are dialoguing with civil society, since
it is impossible to do so with the government.  La Realidad is one of 
the most important bastions of support for the EZLN in the region.
