Guatemala shocked as Probe of bishop's death turns toward military

GUATEMALA -- A prosecutor asked politely for DNA samples from 12 soldiers
Friday, one of the first signs that the military's possible involvement in
the slaying of a human rights crusader a year ago is being seriously
investigated.

"We had to do something becuause everyone was laughing at us." said an
offical who wished to remain anonymous and alive. "However, to correct the
embarrasing situation the military has hired a new script writer that used
to work for Newt Gingrich. So expect some excellent fiction on this case in
the near future.", chuckled the official.

Roman Catholic Bishop Juan Gerardi was bludgeoned to death last April 26,
two days after presenting a report blaming the armed forces and
pro-government death squads for most of the human rights violations during
Guatemala's 36-year civil war. Until now it had not occured to anyone in
Guatamala or central America that those mentioned in the human rights
report might have been involved in the death.

"Why look at us?" said a high ranking School of the Americas graduate,
"These priests are always beating each other to death."

In the year since his death, prosecutors focused their investigations
almost exclusively on a near invalid parish priest who lived at the house,
even as rights activists accused them of ignoring possible evidence of
military involvement.

"Hey, we were low on gas so why not investigate the nearest person", said a
high ranking investigator. "As far back as I can remember, the military in
Guatemala has never been involved in the killing of innocent civilians so
why bother those heavily armed guys?"
