Zedillo a California Mayo 1999 En todo Mexico, la sociedad civil lucha para forjar un cambio democratico y fundamental en su gobierno. El punto clave en ese movimiento amplio es reclamando el derecho de expresion para las organizaciones laborales, campesinas, y pueblos Indios. El objetivo inmediato es abrir el proceso politico con la mobilizacion de la gente de base y demandado elecciones limpias y transparentes. El regimen de partido-gobierno, el PRI o sea el Partido Revolucionario Institucional, que ha impedido los cambios por mas de 70 anos, hoy dia es confrontado. Su lider politico, Ernesto Zedillo, Presidente de Mexico, habla de la democracia pero solo cuando se excluyen los derechos del voto para milliones de Mexicanos que se encuentran trabajando y viviendo en los EE.UU. El partido del Presidente Zedillo, PRI, es el unico partido principal que aboga en CONTRA del voto ausente para los Mexicanos en el extranjero. Igualmente, el Presidente Zedillo se niega ordenar la realizacion de los Acuerdos de San Andres que fueron negociados por una comision ejecutiva y legislativa en el 1996 con los Zapatistas. Indigena de Oaxaca, Guerrero, y Chiapas que ahoy se encuentran en California especialmente apoyan estos Acuerdos. El movimiento de oposicion y reforma aboga en contra de una solucion violenta y militar. En lugar, llamamos por cambios democraticos mas profundos para aumentar los derechos civiles, laborales, y humanos, y asi crear la paz y el progreso economico. La sociedad en California consiste de familias trabajadoras que desean lo mismo. Y los Mexicanos quien han huido por decadas de las condiciones impuestas por el partido-gobierno en Mexico, consistentemente han reclamado en California la igualdad en terminos de los derechos civiles, laborales, y humanos. Aguellos que trabajan y contribuyen no merecen un tratamiento de segunda clase de sus derechos humanos. Tratados comerciales globales como el NAFTA/TLC no van a beneficiar el pueblo comun en los dos lados de la frontera si los asuntos humanos, politicos, y del medio ambiente no son expresados claramente y en voz fuerte. Urgimos una manifestacion fuerte y pacifica en el 18 de Mayo 1999, afuera en el Capitolio para que el Presidente Zedillo nos oiga. Para las elecciones aqui y en Mexico en el 2000, deben oirnos. !Nunca mas un Mexico Sin Nosotros! !Ya Basta! !Democracia Ya! Campana Nacional Por El Voto Ausente 2000: Regarding the Visit of Pres. Zedillo to California May 1999 Throughout Mexico, civil society struggles to bring about a fundamental and democratic change in its government. The key point in this broad movement is the empowerment of labor organizations, campesinos, and Indigenous people. The immediate objective is to open up the political process by organizing the grassroots and demanding fair and transparent elections. The ruling party-state regime, the PRI or the Institutional Revolutionary Party, that for over 70 years has fought against change, is now being challenged. Its political leader, Ernesto Zedillo, President of Mexico, speaks of democracy but only when it excludes the voting rights by absentee ballot for millions of Mexicans who find themselves working and living in the U.S. President Zedillo's party -- the PRI -- is the only major party that is AGAINST the absentee ballot vote for Mexicans abroad. Similarly, President Zedillo refuses to implement the San Andres Accords that were negotiated by a joint executive and legislative commission in 1996 with the Zapatistas. Indian peoples from Oaxaca, Guerrero, y Chiapas that find themselves here now in California especially support those Accords. The opposition and reform movement has declared against a violent and military solution. Instead, we are calling for deeper democratic change by expanding civil, labor, and human rights and thus achieve peace and economic progress. California's society is made up of working families that desire the same. And the Mexicans who have fled for decades because of the conditions imposed by the party-government in Mexico, have consistently demanded equal civil, labor, and human rights in California as well. Those who work and contribute do not deserve second-class human rights treatment. Global commercial treaties like the NAFTA will not benefit common people on both sides of the border if human, political, and environmental issues are not expressed loud and clear. We urge a strong and peaceful demonstration on May 18, 1999, outside the State Capitol building so that President Zedillo will hear us. For the elections here and in Mexico for the year 2000, we should all be heard. Never Again a Mexico Without Us! Enough!
