Mexico Investigates Journalists' Deaths...Slowly Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Friday June 4 8:18 PM ET Journalist's Death Inquiry Ongoing GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) - The Inter American Press Association has praised Mexico for its investigation into the death of a U.S. journalist but criticized probes into the killings of two Mexican reporters. IAPA President Jorge E. Fascetto said Thursday that progress is being made in the investigation into the death last year of Philip True, the Mexico City correspondent for the San Antonio Express-News. Following a meeting with Jalisco state Gov. Alberto Cardenas, Fascetto said state prosecutors `appear to be on the right track and, most importantly, there appears to be political will to solve the case.'' True was killed in the remote mountains of Jalisco while writing a story on the Huichol Indians. Two Huichols have been charged with True's murder, but they claim they were tortured into confessing to the crime. Fascetto, of the newspaper El Dia from La Plata, Argentina, heads a seven-member IAPA delegation that meet Tuesday with Attorney General Jorge Madrazo and Wednesday with President Ernesto Zedillo. The delegation is pressing the government to solve the 1988 slaying of Zeta newspaper co-owner Hector Felix Miranda of Tijuana, and the 1991 killing of El Diario de Juarez columnist Victor Manuel Oropeza. The IAPA says that more than 20 journalists apparently have been killed for doing their jobs in Mexico over the past decade. The organization, which represents more than 1,300 publications throughout the Americas, began a project in 1995 to follow the course of unpunished crimes against journalists. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytcamer-06.06.99-03:02:41-5607
