NICARAGUA CONSTRUCTION BRIGADE/Pastors for Peace Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Jun 3, 1999 by p4p@igc.org Join IFCO/Pastors for Peace and the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua (URACCAN) in the reconstruction of Nicaragua. This special Construction Brigade will direct its efforts to San Carlos, Rio Coco, the Atlantic coast region that suffered the worst destruction from Hurricane Mitch. Brigadistas will help the reconstruction process from the vision of the Costeqos, residents of the Atlantic coast. The construction work will be centered around building a Casa Comunal, or community house, where Costeqos will have the opportunity to receive training courses in health, education, leadership and autonomy rights. This community house will also be utilized by 50 local leaders across 25 communities throughout the region to strengthen their skills and capabilities in reconstructing and transforming their communities post-Mitch and in implementing sustainable reconstruction projects. CONTRIBUTE TO THE COSTEQO VISION OF RECONSTRUCTION Brigadistas will meet in Managua and travel to San Carlos, Rio Coco by plane and boat. During the construction brigade, you will be building 8 hours a day. Construction experience is helpful, but it is not a requirement for participation on the work brigade. During the brigade, you will also hear Costeqos ideas of reconstruction and sustainable development in their communities through an educational program scheduled for late afternoons and evenings, including meetings with community members and nongovernmental and community-based organizations. Nicaragua has suffered the destruction of over $1.5 billion worth of infrastructure, the deaths of nearly 4000 people and the psychological trauma of millions more due to Hurricane Mitch. In response to the outpouring of love and solidarity from US churches, sister city groups, universities and solidarity organizations, IFCO/Pastors for Peace has organized four projects since Mitch struck: *Humanitarian Aid Caravan to Nicaragua, which delivered over 20 tons of critically-needed relief aid three weeks after Mitch struck; *Humanitarian Aid Container Shipment, with thousands of dollars worth of material aid; *Hurricane Relief Fund, which purchased $10,000 worth of medicines, construction materials and foodstuffs; *Emergency Construction Brigade, where brigadistas worked with members of Mayocunda to reconstruct the communitys houses that were razed by the hurricane. for more information and an application contact: IFCO/Pastors for Peace, P.O.
