The Story of Colors by Subcomandante Marcos Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit The Story of Colors by Subcomandante Marcos On March 10, 1999, the NEA decided that it would pull funding that it had previously promised Cinco Puntos Press for the publication of The Story of Colors / La Historia de los Colores by Subcomandante Marcos. The grant had been approved through a democratic two-tiered panel system that is known to be the most rigourous in the arts world. Our contract was in the mail when the director of the NEA, William Ivey, received a call from a New York Times reporter who was curious about why the NEA was funding this book. Bill Ivey, who was preparing to ask Congress for more money, called us up to let us know that he had decided to rescind the grant NEA because it was an "inappropriate use of government funds." and that there were "questions regarding the final destination of the funds." Of course, he never asked us any of these "questions" so we are we are left to assume that mere appearances were enough to spook Bill Ivey. We wanted to let folks know that the (in)famous book is now available. We ran out of the first edition, but have finally received the second printing. For those of you who were looking for the book, please look for it at your local independent bookstore, encourage your local libraries to buy it or give us a call at 800-566-9072. For more information about the book and about the controversy surrounding the NEA's defunding of the book, please check out our website at www.cincopuntos.com. Also, for those of you who would like to contact the NEA about their actions, Bill Ivey can be reached at 202-682-5414. If you have any questions, I can be contacted at cinco@cincopuntos.com.
