In a statement issued through the party's London office Mr O hEarcain said, "The use of this particular regiment of the British Army coupled as it is with the use of one of its most notorious bigoted colonial groupings can only be described as calculated to heighten the tensions in Yugoslavia." "Correct me if I am wrong, but are the activities of the First Battalian of the Para's not under investigation by an independent tribunal for murdering 14 unarmed civilians (who they were there to protect) in Derry in 1971 and was its barracks not recently raided by British Police and Para's who held dual membership with the fascist Combat 18 arrested. Is it any wonder then that the Para's drew first blood on Sunday?" "And, is the RIR not the same regiment who has as its very core the former Ulster Defence Regiment who were and are still among the most noted ethnic cleansers of the latter part of the 20th century. How many members of the RIR/UDR have been arrested and convicted for the murders and intimidation of those who's only crime was to be Irish and Catholic?
