Yugoslav Sociologists "Welcoming Peace" Statement Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source - "YSA (Yugoslav Sociological Association)" Belgrade, June 11, 1999 WELCOMING PEACE With a three-month delay, after enormous suffering inflicted on the civilian population (of all nationalities) and huge material destruction throughout FRY, the Kosovo problem has been moved to the place where it can really be solved - to the UN. The fact that the UN Security Council has taken over the solving of the crisis in accordance with international law, particularly the UN Charter, gives reasons for hope that peace will set in soon, followed by launching of a serious effort to define politically the status of Kosovo. Yugoslav sociologists support: - the arrival of UN troops that will secure peace in Kosovo, demilitarize the region and enable the return of the refugees, - the establishment of a democratic constitutional state in Yugoslavia and Serbia; - the establishment of broad regional autonomy for Kosovo; - prosecution of all persons responsible for war crimes, regardless of the side they belong to; - compensation of all those who suffered damage and material losses due to war operations. In peacetime circumstances the Yugoslav sociologists will continue to uphold the principles of civil society and work on their implementation in Kosovo as well as in other parts of Yugoslavia. In this regard the assistance of sociologists from all over the world will be invaluable.
