NGOs Demand Investigation of Sex-Trafficking Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit Mon, 24 May 1999 18:51:51 +0100 Global Survival Network Dear All who are interest in the campaign to end human trafficking in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, currently spear-headed by Global Survival Network, in collaboration with other human rights groups. Today Global Survival Network released its report "Trapped" along with a letter to Janet Reno at a press conference. GSN, Global Exchange, and a representative of the underground labor/human rights movement of foreign workers in Saipan, Nousher Jahedi, called on the Dept. of Justice to launch a full scale probe of human trafficking in the Marianas, and to investigate possible inappropriate connections between Congressman Tom DeLay (R-TX)and business executives on Saipan. We also called on Congress to quickly pass legislation that can alleviate the suffering of tens of thousands of trafficked victims in the Marianas. Congressman George Miller issued a similar statement. Much press, including ABC, Fox, and a number of papers and radio stations were present. Today the Washington Post ran a strong article by William Branigin on page A6, titled "Human Rights Group Urges Action on Saipan". National Public Radio's Market Place also ran a story. Tonight ABC's 20/20 will run another story at 8pm EST. This week GSN will be meeting with the Department of Justice to discuss what can be done.
