The Irish Technology Career Expo, organised by IT Staffing Ltd, will showcase job opportunities in Ireland and provide hi-tech professionals with a complete overview of what is required to relocate to Ireland. Among the companies attending the fair are Tellabs, Motorola, Trintech, HP, Saville Systems, Analog Devices, Ascend, IBM, Eurologic, Logica, Aer Lingus, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Enterprise Ireland. Register in advance and see schedule of seminars at http://www.ITireland.com KEVIN MELIA ADDRESSES MSL'S 3RD INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR - Kevin Melia, CEO Manufacturers' Services Ltd, delivered the opening address at MSL's 3rd International Seminar in Athlone last week, outlining the company's growth, strategy, goals and future plans. He recalled how the company has broadened its service offering from PCB assembly and test, to system assembly and test, to order fulfilment and now into engineering and design services. In 1998 MSL had a turnover of $838m, a 49% increase on the previous year. It is currently the eighth largest player in its segment and has a goal of reaching the top five, focusing on long-term relationships with 25 major OEMs around the world. Kevin, who expects to see expansion into China, Eastern Europe and Mexico, weighed up the pros and cons of seeking a stock exchange listing and seemed to favour the IPO route, "when appropriate". NEW SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PARK OPENED IN SOUTH DUBLIN - Taoiseach Bertie Ahern formally opened the new 400-acre Cherrywood Science and Technology Park in Cabinteely last week. The development, which will be close to the extended M50 motorway, is ultimately expected to have a total workforce of 7,500, employed in a range of companies. One of the first corporations to take up residence will be Lucent Technologies, which is moving its GSM programming division and some 450 staff to a new office block on the site. EXPANSION AT ICS UNICORP IN BELFAST CREATES NEW JOBS - ICS Unicomp, an American-owned computer company, has invested Stg1.3m in the expansion of its Belfast operation. The company has been in Belfast for more than 30 years and employs 105 people, including 27 through this expansion. It expects to recruit a further 23 over the next three years. GALEN SPENDS STG19.8M ACQUIRING DRUG RANGE - Galen Holdings, the Northern pharmaceutical group, has invested Stg19.8m on the product and development portfolios of British group Bartholomew Rhodes. This move is Galen's biggest acquisition since a planned merger with Dutch group Ferring fell through last year, and will see the Craigavon-based company acquire the rights to the new products. Bartholomew Rhodes products include a range of medical and anti-inflammatory products. DISPUTE OF THIRD MOBILE PHONE LICENCE IN COURT - The legal challenge by British company Orange, to the awarding of the third Irish mobile phone licence to Meteor in June 1998, resumes in the High Court this week. A verdict is expected in July. Meteor is a consortium led by Western Wireless, a US-based group, and the Irish-owned RF Communications. This third operator will provide further competition to Eircell and Esat Digifone. There are now over one million mobile phone users in Ireland, where the current population stands at approximately 3.7m. CHAMPION SPORTS BUYS RIVAL, MARATHON SPORTS - Champion Sports, one of the country's biggest sports retailers, paid IR10m for its main rival Marathon Sports. The enlarged group will now have 26 stores in Ireland and will embark on further expansion nation-wide. Warehouse operations will be rationalised, but there will be no job losses. The sports retailing market in Ireland is estimated to be worth IR500m. Y2K WILL HIT SMALL FIRMS HARDEST - A new survey, conducted by the Small Firms Association (SFA), found that more than 70% of small businesses could face temporary closure because of inadequate planning for Y2K. The Association has urged the government to provide a IR10m fund to help small firms with the cost of compliance, and in addition to this, to allow them a two-year tax write-off on Y2K expenditure. Over 82% of firms responding to the survey said that they had appointed a senior person to co-ordinate the company's action plan. ECONOMIC GROWTH SLOWDOWN PREDICTED - Chief economist at Davy Stockbrokers, Jim O'Leary, has predicted a gradual slowdown in the Irish economy rather than a sudden disruption, according to the firm's June economic report. Employment growth will continue, with unemployment falling, but the labour market will tighten as pressure on infrastructure grows. The report also focuses on the deceleration in GNP growth from 8.8% in 1998, to 6.8% for 1999 and an estimated 5.5% in 2000. Tax revenue will be greater than official predictions, and the budget surplus will reach 2.7% of GDP. The report included a warning that the current economic boom has made the economy more vulnerable to external shock. SHARE PRICE DOWN FOLLOWING LOSS AT SILVERMINES - Silvermines, the engineering and technology group, announced at the annual general meeting last Thursday that it intends to divest itself of its aerospace and electrical business. This follows the company's poor performance in 1998 when it returned a loss of Stg726k. Current share price stands at IR0.34, which was the reason for much criticism of the company by shareholders. The group now aims to focus on security and broadcast divisions, and will try to establish itself in emerging markets. IWP REPORT FALL IN PROFITS - IWP, the industrial holding group, reported an 11% fall in pre-tax profits to IR22.8m in the year to March. Overall, group turnover rose from IR262.4m to IR374.9m, but this was mainly due to the acquisition of Jeyes, which transformed IWP's household division. Jeyes reported operating profits of IR10.4m. The fall in profits was attributed to market difficulties in Russia, which is the group's biggest export market. Problems were also experienced in other Eastern European countries and in Britain. IRISH PRESS ACQUIRES SHARE IN RADIO COMPANY - Irish Press plc has purchased a 30% share of County Tipperary Radio, which operates local radio franchises in the north and south of the county. Vincent Jennings, chairman of Irish Press, and James Lenehan, director, have joined the board of the radio station. Irish Press plc is the holding group for the former newspapers - Irish Press, Evening Press and Sunday Press which closed in 1995. BANK OF IRELAND TO ESTABLISH INTERNET OFFSHORE BANK - Bank of Ireland, the country's second largest bank, has announced the establishment of an Internet offshore bank, based in the Isle of Man. The new service will be called Fsharp and represents a very substantial investment by the bank. It aims to be fully operational by September and will target expatriates who wish to avail of a high-tech 24-hour banking, providing a range of services including deposit and fund management services, credit and debit cards. The new operation will employ 45 people, but its services will not be available to Irish or British residents. NEW LEGISLATION WILL REDUCE POWERS OF THE CENTRAL BANK - Under new legislation due to go to the Cabinet in the next two weeks, the Central Bank will lose its authority and control over financial institutions, bringing it in line with all other such European institutions. An advisory group has recommended that a new body should be set up to oversee and regulate all banks, building societies and similar organisations. The Central Bank will retain its monetary policy functions and will still be a member of the European System of Central Banks. DELL TAKES NO.2 POSITION IN EUROPEAN NOTEBOOK MARKET - US computer giant Dell has announced that it is now holds the No.2 position in the European notebook computer market for the first quarter of 1999, up from No.5 for the same period last year. Overall, the market growth for portables increased by 30.3%, and Dell achieved a growth of 191%, expanding its market share in the segment to 16.9%. The company, which employs more than 4,000 people in Ireland, is the fastest growing manufacturer of such products. BALTIMORE TO PROVIDE GLOBAL ENTERPRISE SECURITY FOR DEUTSCHE BANK - Baltimore Technologies, a global provider of e-commerce and enterprise and security solutions, announced last week that Deutsche Bank AG, one of the world's largest banking groups, has licensed Baltimore's UniCERT certificate authority (CA) system for its internal enterprise security requirements. UniCERT will serve as a key component of the global security infrastructure that protects Deutsche Bank's IT network. Baltimore operates from 15 cities world-wide with main offices in London, Dublin, Boston and Sydney. IRISH SOFTWARE COMPANY, IFS, RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT - Irish software company International Financial Systems (IFS) is to receive international investment as Deutsche Bank and Intel Corporation have taken a joint shareholding of 14%. IFS, developer of collateralised trading applications for international financial institutions, will initially use the capital to extend its ongoing R&D program and to expand its global marketing activities in Europe, Asia and North America. The Dublin company's primary application, MarginMan, is used by more than 60 leading financial institutions including Deutsche Bank, ABN Amro, ANZ, Citibank, Dresdner Kleinwort Benson and Royal Bank of Canada. The Irish software company is currently developing a number of new applications for the global banking industry. See http://www.ifs.ie ESAT NET BECOMES IRELAND'S FIRST CSP - Esat Net claims to be Ireland's first Commerce Service Provider (CSP) with the launch of its eStore, which will allow Irish companies to sell products and services over the Internet and to accept credit card payments on-line securely. This new venture is supported by a broad range of services, including product training, customer support and professional services, and is tailored to fit any requirements, from small merchants to global enterprise. With eStore, businesses use a new or established website on the Internet to display an image and description of all their products. Consumers will have the option of placing products in a shopping basket and before they leave the site, goods will be paid for by credit card. OCEAN LAUNCHES IRELAND'S FIRST FREE INTERNET SERVICE - Ocean, the joint venture from ESB and British Telecom, has launched Ireland's first free Internet service. Oceanfree.net will provide unlimited free access to the Internet, a move which will put increased pressure on the other ISPs operating in the Irish market. The service was launched on Wednesday and CDs were distributed freely nationwide, in all ESB shops and Texaco garages, and Dublin's Grafton Street. As well as unlimited email addresses, the portal features the best of the Irish sites, and provides access to over 1.8m pages of information. Ocean was established a year ago, and expects this new move to help secure 30% of the market share as well as dramatically increasing and strengthening its presence. Ireland currently has over one million households with PC penetration of 15%, and strong growth is expected in the coming years. The introduction of free Internet services in other markets has resulted in dramatic increases in numbers, and with over 120,000 Internet subscribers already in Ireland, it is expected that Oceanfree.net will have similar impact. ENBA RECEIVES REGULATORY APPROVAL - Enba plc, the newly established Dublin-based Internet financial services company, and its joint venture partner, Banque d'Escompte, have received regulatory approval from Banque de France for two new Internet based banking services which they plan to launch in Britain in approximately six weeks. Two new services are 'First-e' and 'Factor-e'. 'First-e' is a new consumer banking service which will offer a full range of Internet based banking services, mainly to UK resident customers. 'Factor-e' will provide Internet-based financial services and products to other businesses, either on an own branding or co-branding basis. EDS IRELAND OFFERS TECHNOLOGY GRANTS TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS - Information Technology services provider, EDS Ireland, announced the second Primary School Technology Grant competition which will give away in excess of IR10k to schools across the country. The EDS programme is designed to help primary school teachers purchase information technology products and services that will improve their pupils' ability to learn. The programme is aimed at supporting children from infants through to sixth class and can be used to purchase technology related items not covered by the school or the Department of Education. DSS, which employs 60 in its head office in Dublin, claims that this acquisition makes it the leading Irish-owned reseller in the Irish marketplace. Combined revenue for the two companies is estimated to be in the region of IR30m for 1998, with staff numbers of over 150 between offices in Ireland, Germany, Spain and Poland. Professor McKenna will take up his post in October, on the retirement of Lord Smith of Clifton, the present vice-chancellor. STUDY INDICATES HIGH DROP-OUT RATE IN IT's - A new study has revealed that 37% of students in three Institutes of Technology failed their end-of-term exams or dropped out of college at the end of their first year. The survey, carried out by researchers Anne Carpenter, Kathleen Lynch and Mairead Healy, focused on Carlow, Tralee and Dundalk Institutes of Technology, though the pattern is seen to be indicative of a country-wide trend. Perhaps the most worrying statistic disclosed by the questionnaire was the fact that two fifths of those surveyed said the course they had failed or dropped out of had been the only one open to them on the back of their Leaving Cert. results. Invariably those who left after first year had not achieved good Leaving Cert results and nearly 50% of the students admitted they had chosen the wrong course of study. Overall the study found the main reasons for leaving were undefined career hopes, a lack of clear and informative choice on courses and careers, and lack of communication between students and college staff. NEW NCI CAMPUS ANNOUNCED FOR DUBLIN DOCKLANDS - The National College of Ireland is to open a new campus on Dublin's docklands in two years' time. The announcement was made last Tuesday by NCI president Joyce O'Connor who said the development, to be unveiled in 2001, would "in a synergistic way address the issue of social inclusion at a local and national level while also meeting the needs of Irish business". The Dublin Docklands Development Authority is enthusiastic about the project which, according to its chairman Lar Bradshaw, will contribute to the "lifelong learning concept which the authority has been implementing since inception". The sale of NCI's current campus at Ranelagh will contribute IR5m to the expected total cost of IR50m. > > > > > > > > > JOB ADVERTISEMENTS < < < < < < < < < NewMediaCV The proliferation of the Internet has opened major new business opportunities in publishing, e-commerce and advertising.
