Most of the positions announced last Friday will be filled by software and computer graduates who are required for a high quality services operation. HP has been based in Ireland since 1995 although it had a sales and service operation here prior to that. Tanaiste Mary Harney was very pleased with the announcement as she viewed the new development as "a valuable reference for IDA Ireland in attracting further services projects from major international manufacturing companies". (See advertisement in the edition) JURYS-DOYLE HOTEL AGREEMENT CEMENTED - The Jurys acquisition of Doyle Hotels has finally been agreed after months of tough negotiations which have been underway since last September. The purchase price is IR187.4m but Jurys also take on debts of IR60m. The four members of the Doyle family are to receive IR90.6m in cash and IR96.8m in new shares in the expanded company. This gives Margaret Doyle and her three daughters the largest single stake (25%) in what will be known as the Jurys Doyle Hotel Group, which will have 28 hotels and inns in Ireland, the UK and the US. TRANSITION OPTICAL TO ADD 115 STAFF AT ITS TUAM PLANT - Transitions Optical is to create a further 115 new jobs in a IR14m IDA-backed investment at its manufacturing plant in Tuam, Co. Galway. The company was established in Tuam in 1994 to manufacture photochromatic plastic lenses for the European market and the Florida-based corporation is the fourth largest producer of lenses in the world. A spokesperson for IDA Ireland said that the plant, which currently employs 220 people, is now the strategic operations centre for its parent company, providing sales, customer service, distribution and marketing operations. DELTA DENTAL PLAN TO CREATE 150 NEW JOBS FOR CLAREMORRIS - Delta Dental Plan (DDPM), a US insurance company which has its headquarters in Minnesota, is to establish a claims processing unit in Claremorris, Co. Mayo. This new facility will employ 150 people. DDPM already has a 51% share in DeCare Delta Systems Ireland, a software development centre in Cork established in 1998 and which currently employs 38 people. DDPM is moving in to a 10,000 sq ft unit built by Claremorris business interests, anxious to attract industry to the town. SMURFIT SHARES RISE - Shares in the Jefferson Smurfit Group rose by 41% last week to close at 2.60 euros on Friday. By close of business on Monday, the shares had jumped another 10 points to 2.70 euros. This new boost results from a sudden wave of interest in paper and packaging stocks world-wide. A key trigger for the renewed interest in the shares was a report issued on the US linerboard industry last week. This is the core of Smurfit's business, and helped to increase confidence in prospects for higher prices in the near future. AIB'S US SUBSIDIARIES TO BE KNOWN AS ALLFIRST - Allied Irish Bank has announced that all of its US banking divisions will be changing their names to Allfirst as of June 28, 1999. AIB is to spend around $10m on the rebranding programme. Currently the bank is known as First Maryland Bancorp and trades under First National Bank of Maryland, Dauphin Deposit Bank and other names inherited through takeovers. ISPAT SEES 8.8% RISE IN SALES IN CORK PLANT - Ispat, the former Irish Steel plant in Haulbowline, in Cork Harbour, has announced an 8.8% increase in sales for 1998. The global steel producer reported a sales figure of $102m and has seen profits almost double since the company was taken over in 1996. When Ispat bought Irish Steel from the Government for the sum of IR1, it assumed debts of $51m and has since turned the company into a profit making operation. A spokesperson for Ispat said the company had reduced costs by sourcing scrap metal from Ireland instead of importing the material from abroad. RESCUE PLAN FOR ATLANTIC MILLS JOBS IN LONGFORD - New hopes are rising for a plan to rescue the former Atlantic Mills textile plant in Clondra, Co. Longford, which closed in January with the loss of 150 jobs. Dutch textile giant Royal Ten Cate has been negotiating the sale of the plant with two interested parties and says it is confident of closing a deal which will retain textile production and employ 300 people. The main runner is said to be a consortium headed by Dr Chris McCormack, a business consultant and former director general of the Irish Road Hauliers' Association. The consortium has plans to reopen the facility on the Longford-Roscommon border and invest a further IR20m. SUN MICROSYSTEMS' THIRD QUARTER REVENUE REPORT - Sun Microsystems Inc., the parent company of Sun Microsystems Ireland ((http://www.sun.ie) has reported record results for the third financial quarter to March 28, 1999. Third quarter revenues stood at $2.936bn, an increase of 24% on last year's figures. Net income rose by 26% and earning per share ratio gained 20%. Sun Microsystems Ireland currently employs 160 people at its European Software Centre in Dublin, and is currently increasing the size of that operation with a major facilities expansion and immediate recruitment of an additional 65 employees. The Dublin centre is responsible for strategic software engineering roles including software development, software localisation and system testing. CAMBRIDGE TECHNOLOGY PARTNERS PUBLISH FIRST QUARTER RESULTS - Cambridge Technology Partners, the international management consultants and systems integration firm, has announced increased revenues but lower net earnings for its first quarter. Revenues for the first three months of 1999 reached $151.4m, compared with $142.2m for the same period in 1998. Net income for the quarter was $7.5m, or $.12 per share (diluted) compared with $12.5m, or $.20 per share (diluted) for the same period in 1998. Cambridge (http://www.ctp.com) has 55 offices world-wide and employs 100 people in its Dublin office. The company also announced that it will take a one-time charge in quarter two for a human resource repositioning and retention programme, which will enable the company to retain, retrain, relocate and strategically re-deploy employees into its e-business service segments. FIRST QUARTER RETURNS AT IONA TECHNOLOGIES SHOW EXPECTED DIP - IONA Technologies, the middleware solution provider, has reported disappointing financial results for the first quarter of 1999 with a net loss of $0.4m. This translates to $0.02 per share. For the corresponding period of 1998, IONA reported a net profit of $2m. Revenue for the period was $21.2m, an increase of 20% over the first quarter of 1998. Chairman and CEO Dr Chris Horn said, "These results do not reflect the level of performance I expect from IONA. This quarter's performance reflects executional issues around our rate of transition to an enterprise sales model. Market demand and cost controls remain strong and we see no new or significant competitive pressure". IONA recently launched its new brand and unveiled its middleware vision, entitled C3 (Containers, Components and Connectors), at IONA World in San Francisco in February. GOOD SECOND QUARTER FOR APPLE - Apple Computer, Inc. posted a net profit of $135m, or $.84 per diluted share, in its second quarter ending March 27. This compares with a net profit of $55m, or $.38 per diluted share, achieved in the same period last year. Revenues for the quarter were $1.53bn, up 9% and gross margins were 26.3%, up from 24.8%. International sales accounted for 50% of the quarter's revenues. The current quarter's results included $42m net gain from non-recurring items, without which the net profit for the quarter would have been $93m, or $.60 per diluted share. Strong sales of iMac and Power Macintosh G3 computers drove overall unit growth to 27% year-on-year, compared with IDC's worldwide forecast for industry growth of 14%. COMPAQ REPORTS FIRST QUARTER EARNINGS - Compaq Computer Corporation announced world-wide sales of $9.4bn for the first quarter ended March 31, an increase of almost 66% over the first quarter of 1998. Net income for the quarter was $281m, or $0.16 per share, compared with $16m last year, or $0.01 per share, when profits were affected by the acquisition of Digital. Following the recent profit warning the results were ahead of the latest market expectations but were described as "disappointing and unacceptable" by Benjamin M. Rosen, Compaq Chairman and acting Chief Executive Officer. Three days earlier the corporation's CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer and chief financial officer Earl Mason resigned on foot of the results. Product sales for the quarter were $7.8bn, an increase of $2.2bn or approximately 40% above the reported first quarter of 1998. According to a company spokesperson, the first quarter performance for the commercial PC business was below internal expectations as a result of less than anticipated market demand and increased competitive pricing. MICROSOFT REPORTS STRONG PERFORMANCE - Microsoft Corporation, which employs more than 1,000 in its Irish operations, today reported net income of $1.92bn and diluted earnings per share of $0.35 for the quarter ended March 31, a 40% increase over the $0.25 diluted earnings per share reported for the corresponding quarter last year. Revenue totalled $4.33bn, a 15% increase over the $3.77bn for the same period last year. Referring to the results, chief financial officer Greg Maffei said "Microsoft had solid performance across all product lines, but the brightest spots were the continued migration to Windows NT Workstation, strong demand for Office despite the impending upgrade, and the strength of our server applications. Results in Asia were also much improved". 490 WORKERS AT THERMO KING TO GO ON FOUR-DAY WEEK - A decline in demand for trailer refrigeration units in Russia has prompted short time working in the Thermo King plant in Galway. Some 490 of the 650-strong workforce are going on a four-day week for two months from the beginning of May. Management remains confident of a return to full-time work by July. DISTILLING COMPANIES IN VODKA ROW - A spokesman for the company producing Boru Vodka in west Cork has accused the French-owned Irish Distillers of being afraid of competition after a complaint was lodged with the Director of Consumer Affairs. While Irish Distillers refuses to comment it is known that the company alleges that Boru is not distilled solely from grain as a sample showed traces of whey alcohol. The Boru spokesman insists that its product is 100% grain spirit and that the real problem is that Irish Distillers Huzzar brand is losing 15% to 20% market share. NEW VENTURE FINANCE FOR LIONBRIDGE TECHNOLOGIES - Lionbridge Technologies, the Ballina-based provider of enterprise globalisation services to the IT industry, has secured $12m in venture financing from US investors. The new funds will be used in the further expansion at the company's facility in Ballina, Co. Mayo. Lionbridge Technologies currently employs 40 software engineers, and this number is expected to grow to 100 before the end of the year. General Manager of the European Software Test Centre, Paul McBride, said, "This new financing is important as we begin a new round of aggressive hiring and infrastructure investment in the Ballina facility". The funding comes at a time when the company is rapidly expanding its operations to meet market demand for multilingual eSupport services, described by Sheena Dempsey, general manager of Lionbridge Technologies, Blackrock, as "the next wave of Internet enabled services," which "will enable Lionbridge to provide its customers unique multilingual services on a global basis." FIRST PARC NATIONAL AWARDS - The first PARC National Awards were presented on April 16 at the Irish Institute of Training and Development's 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner. There were five winning organisations; Aer Rianta, the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment, Martin Services, John Sisk & Son Ltd and Aughinish Alumina. TELE-SERVICES JOBS TO DOUBLE - It has been predicted that the number of tele-services jobs in Ireland will double in the next few years. At present there are approximately 60 tele-services companies operating here, employing a total of 6,000 people. At an IDA Ireland/Forfas seminar for career guidance in Galway, it was announced that this figure is predicted to quickly grow to 12,000. ESAT TELECOM IN DEAL WITH GLOBAL ONE - Esat Telecom Group plc has become the official "National Partner" in Ireland of Global One, the world-wide joint venture of Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom and Sprint. As part of the deal Esat has purchased certain Global One local operational assets for $5m. A spokesman for Esat described the National Partner agreement as a significant development, allowing it to provide seamless voice, Internet and high-end data applications through the Global One network around the world. Under the agreement Global One's Irish customer base will migrate to Esat, adding a number of high profile corporate accounts to its client base. BELFAST TO HOLD WORLD FORUM CONFERENCE - Belfast is this year's location for a six-day international conference which will be attended by more than 1,000 delegates, including prominent politicians and business people. The Conference is being convened by the San Francisco-based State of the World Council, and should prove very lucrative to Belfast. The idea was originally conceived by former Russian Premier Mikhail Gorbachev and former US President Ronald Reagan following the end of the Cold War. The theme of the conference, which takes place May 4-9, is "The Challenge of Reconciliation: Diversity and Community in a Global Age". IRISH CAR SALES UP 28.5% FOR 1999 - Car sales in the first quarter of 1999 totalled 72,504, up 28.5% on last year's figures. Ford was the most popular marque with 7,978 registrations, representing an 11% market share. Opel (GM) was in second place with 10.9% or 7,952 and Nissan was close behind on 7,612, followed by Toyota and Volkswagen. The service, to be known as ChamberCERT, will issue digital certificates to member organisations for secure authenticated Internet business including web banking, online shopping and email. EBS TO EXPAND EMPLOYEE FRANCHISE SCHEME - The EBS Building Society has offered employees the chance to become franchisees of the organisation. This move is part of a bid to diversify its distribution network. The building society has announced that it is considering converting several more of its existing branches into franchise operations. At present, there are already 16 branches nationwide which operate on this basis. This system is seen as a departure from the traditional Irish financial services industry, although it is quite a common practice in Europe. PRIORITY DATA HEALTH CHECK TO BE SHOWCASED AT WINDOWS WORLD 1999 - As software piracy, hackers and computer viruses are becoming big concerns for Irish businesses, a new security audit service, Priority Data Health Check, is being showcased at the Computing Solutions Show, Windows World 1999, on April 28 & 29 in Dublin's RDS. This major exhibition will feature all new developments in the world of computing, networking and the Internet, including the launch of over 40 new hi-tech products. More than 100 Irish and international companies will be taking part in Ireland's largest exposition of computing technologies and information management seminars. Irish-owned Priority Data Systems is a software house which specialises in stand alone and network related PC security issues. That takes place on April 28 at 8:00pm, Aula Maxima, NUI, Galway. STUDENTS WIN CASE AGAINST DUBLIN VEC - The City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee has settled a claim taken by 35 former students against one of its colleges. On completion of a three-year diploma in Marketing and Administration which ended in June 1991 the students were offered places on a further one-year programme which promised an advanced diploma in marketing and administration. The claimants also alleged that the VEC had undertaken to approach Trinity College Dublin regarding classification of the advanced diploma to degree level. The students paid tuition fees for the one-year course but began legal proceedings when, on completion, the college failed to award either an advanced diploma or a degree. The former students claimed that the VEC had not addressed the issue of a degree classified by TCD and without classification the one-year programme was of no practical benefit to them in furthering their careers. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. IR450K DONATION TO TCD CHILDREN'S RESEARCH CENTRE - An unidentified donor has given IR450k to the Children's Research Centre at Trinity College.
