Final bids from the five interested parties were supposed to be submitted by Friday, April 23. However the bid from the US company NTL did not specify a monetary amount but offered to top the highest bid by 15%. It seems that NM Rothschild, the London-based consultants commissioned to manage the process, decided to give the companies the opportunity to submit a revised bid rather than disqualify NTL. NTL's new bid was for IR525m which was far in excess of the next highest bid, IR410m from the consortium which included Esat Telecom. Both sides were in court on Friday and have been presenting their arguments since then. Cablelink's current owners, RTE and Telecom Eireann, insist they are perfectly within their rights in trying to obtain the highest price possible. During the hearing Denis O'Brien alleged that a week before the bidding deadline, NTL's chief operating officer John Gregg had suggested to him that that all the interested parties should create a consortium to acquire Cablelink at a more modest price. Mr O'Brien said he abruptly ended the discussions, which took place in New York, but claimed that NTL followed up with a letter outlining the size of the stakes to be held by each of the participants, using code names to identify the various companies. TELECOM EIREANN INTERESTED IN ACQUIRING HORIZON - Telecom Eireann is understood to be in acquisition negotiations with computer company Horizon just a month after the Cork-based company announcedthat it was to seek a stock market flotation. These plans have now been abandoned, or at least put on hold. This will be Telecom's biggest acquisition to date in a takeover deal expected to be worth approximately IR60m. Horizon is one of the State's largest independent providers of computer services and information technology products, with a very strong growth record in recent years. Last year when a subtantial investment was made in the company it valued it at IR45m. The plan is to complete the deal before the Telecom Eireann flotation. TELECOM EIREANN FLOTATION EXPECTED TO BE OVERSUBSCRIBED - Over 500,000 people have already registered an interest in buying share Telecom Eireann in the first eight days of the company's publicity campaign. Based on this, it is predicted that the flotation will be oversubscribed. Invitations to register were mailed to some 2.8m individuals and a team of 400 is involved in fielding enquiry calls regarding the flotation. The division of shares to be allocated between institutional and private shareholders has yet to be decided, but response to this public campaign will be a deciding factor. CO. DONEGAL TO GET 226 NEW JOBS - A number of new projects, supported by the IDA and Enterprise Ireland, will create 226 new jobs in Co. Donegal. In addition, negotiations which should lead to a further 300 jobs in the near future are at an advanced stage. This good news follows intensive promotion of Donegal by the Government agencies since the major downsizing at Fruit of the Loom was announced in November 1998. PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. will employ 150 people in an insurance processing centre in Letterkenny. Also in Letterkenny, Sterling Fluid Systems will create 16 jobs in a new information technology centre, which will provide IT support to some 50 Sterling facilities internationally. The remainder of the new jobs will come in smaller indigenous companies around the county. Most of these are in some way connected with the fishing industry, from net manufacturers in Killybegs and Greencastle to a fish processor and a life-saving equipment overhaul company. The recently resurrected Donegal carpets is also creating 10 jobs in Killybegs. DELL EMPLOYEES CONTRIBUTE TO LOCAL AND GLOBAL CHARITIES - Employees at Dell in Limerick and Bray have contributed a total of IR53k to local and global charities since 1998. Members of the Dell Employees' Charity Fund each donate IR1 from their weekly pay to charity. Funds are distributed twice yearly, with 50% going to two third world organisations, Bothar, which sends Irish dairy cows and goats to needy families in Africa and the Middle East; and Goal, which is active throughout the developing world and which is currently engaged in helping to alleviate the refugee crisis in Kosovo. Among the local charities to benefit are: the Rape Crisis Centre, the Irish Cancer Society, Childline, St Vincent de Paul, Bray Open Door and the Limerick Marine Search and Rescue. Dell has been located in Ireland since 1990 and is currently acknowledged as Ireland's largest IT employer with over 4,000 employees. CBT SYSTEMS WINS SELF STUDY COURSE OF THE YEAR GOLD AWARD - In the United States CBT Systems, the Dublin-based provider of interactive education software for information technology training, has been awarded the Institute of IT Training's Gold Award for the Self Study Course of the Year for the third consecutive year. Speaking at the launch of the plan, Education Officer Darren McCallig claimed the Government "wasted" IR100m each year because students enrolled for college places and then failed to see them through. The USI is urging the Government to invest IR10m to tackle the problem and has detailed a number of strategies to do so. These include study skills classes, student peer supports and a clearer focus on the needs of students from disadvantaged areas. Career guidance teachers at secondary schools have a different view and say that with greater numbers they could ensure that students made a more informed choice when applying for third-level places. UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION DUBLIN BRANCH - The Dublin branch of the University of Ulster Alumni Association will hold a launch event in the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre, College Green on Tuesday May 11, starting at 6:00pm. An immediate motion of no-confidence was tabled and passed with a 44 to 18 majority. After the vote Mr McGarrity said he was "concerned" that the ballot was divided along sectarian lines and refused to resign. A QUB spokesperson defended Mr McGarrity's actions, saying, "Paul McGarrity has an obligation to uphold the rights of all students, he acted to uphold the charter and to protect the integrity of the union".
