CABLELINK SOLD TO NTL AS LEGAL BID FAILS - Denis O'Brien failed in his bid to prevent RTE and Telecom Eireann selling Cablelink to US telecommunications company NTL. It took until Thursday before the High Court dismissed the case, which was actually taken by a company called Howberry Lane Ltd, a consortium formed by ESAT Telecom and Charter Communications. The judge decided that the request for tenders for Cablelink had so many escape clauses that Howberry Lane had no case. Essentially RTE and Telecom retained the right to sell Cablelink to anyone, at any time for whatever price they chose. The case was then taken to the Supreme Court but received short shrift there, and the sale went ahead. It seems now that NTL actually paid IR535m, IR10m more than previously reported. Early this year analysts suggested that the price would be between IR200m and IR250m. NTL, which has a significant presence in the North where it trades under the name CableTel, now plans to create an all-Ireland network, providing a choice of around 50 television channels, high speed Internet access and low cost telephone calls. This will require an investment of IR200m over the next five years. Afterwards Mr O'Brien issued a statement expressing his disappointment at the outcome while re-stating his company's strong position in the telecoms marketplace. He concluded by saying, "..it's business as usual". TRINITY TECHNOLOGY IN DEAL WITH ULSTER BANK - Business solutions provider Trinity Technology is to provide Ulster Bank with a corporate intranet service. It will be used initially by Ulster Bank head office in Belfast and will deliver business services online to over 700 staff, with future plans to introduce it to external sites and offices throughout the North. The intranet facilities will be used to streamline business processes and provide online facilities to all staff. Trinity Technology has offices in both Dublin and Belfast and employs more than 100 people as a provider of corporate technology solutions to companies in Ireland. ESAT TELECOM LAUNCHES BUSINESS ALL-IN-ONE "SMART" SERVICE - Esat Telecom, the Nasdaq-quoted Irish telecommunications company, has launched a new all-in-one communications package aimed at the small business market. This new offering will provide voice, fax, Internet and calling card services and has been devised to cater for the small business sector in Ireland. The "Smart" package offers a very competitive rate for calls within Ireland, and Esat has already signed up 450 new customers for the service. NEW US OFFICES FOR IRISH SOFTWARE COMPANY, IFS - Irish software company International Financial Systems (IFS) has opened a new US office as part of a major global expansion programme. IFS specialises in web-enabled collateralised trading and risk management software for the international financial markets, and employs almost 50 people world-wide. The Park Avenue office in New York will offer account management and full product support services to the growing IFS customer base operating within North America. The company also hopes that this new location will act as a springboard into the US banking sector. (http://www.ifs.ie) IR500M TO BE INVESTED IN IRISH TECHNOLOGY OVER NEXT FIVE YEARS - Almost IR500m will be invested in the Irish technology sector over the next five years, according to the director of Davy Corporate Finance, Don Harrington. "Venture capitalists", he said, "have traditionally been slow to fund Irish technology company start ups and development. This situation has come full circle where significant capital investment is available for Irish technology companies". He was speaking at last week's Davy Irish Technology Conference on "Realising Value and Raising Capital for Irish Technology Companies", the first of a series of private conferences for the Irish technology sector hosted by Davy Corporate Finance. Mr Harrington believes that Irish technology companies will move away from focusing on Nasdaq to more listings in the home and European market as they seek to widen their shareholder base. He also stressed that the key for the sector was to work closely with venture capitalists in funding growth and development for the long-term rather than the short-term. AIRTEL ATN IN ACQUISITION DEAL WITH NATIONAL AVIONICS LTD - Airtel ATN, the independent Irish software developer and supplier of data communications to the aviation industry, has completed a deal to acquire the aviation communications business of National Avionics Ltd. Airtel ATN is headquartered at Dun Laoghaire from where it supplies Air Traffic Control, Airline Operations and Passenger Communications solutions to customers in Europe, the United States and the Asia-Pacific region. This new acquisition will broaden Airtel ATN's customer base, which will now include organisations such as the European Space Agency. It will also strengthen the company's research and development capability in data communications, and is expected to lead to a doubling of the workforce from 25 to 50. (http://www.airtel-atn.com) TANAISTE LAUNCHES SHANNON REGION'S INFORMATION SOCIETY PLAN - Tanaiste Mary Harney recently launched the Shannon Regional Information Society Strategy and Action Plan, the culmination of Phase 1 of the ShIPP (Shannon Region Information Society Partnership Project) launched in late 1997. The project, led by Shannon Development and MAC Ltd, was part funded by the European Commission, and set out to identify the steps needed to prepare the region for the Information Society. The resultant action plan, which covers the period 1999-2001, could involve a total investment of up to IR66m. The ShIPP action plan aims to create a vision of a future Shannon Regional Information Society which, it is hoped, will generate new employment opportunities, improve the quality of life and increase the competitiveness of the businesses throughout the region. A major highlight of the plan is its focus on electronic commerce and its potential for Irish enterprise, eliminating as it does the notion of peripherality. Location will become secondary to technical infrastructure and the capability of doing business on line. ShIPP has incorporated an e-commerce pilot project, the Ennis Information Age Town, into its overall programme. Newly-appointed ISA Chairperson Gerry Jones explains, "Our new e-business web site (http//www.software.ie) will enable members to enjoy the boom of e-commerce while at the same time reducing administrative tasks and increasing productivity. The key for Irish companies is to recognise the ability to transform their traditional web sites and this is especially important for Irish software companies wishing to extend their global customer base." GALEN HOLDINGS IN TAKEOVER OF US COMPANY - Galen Holdings, the Portadown-based pharmaceuticals group, has acquired a small New Jersey-based clinical trials company. Interactive Clinical Technologies Inc. (ICTI), which employs around 30 staff, will continue to operate in the US under its own name, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Galen. INCREASE IN FIRST HALF PROFITS AT ANGLO IRISH BANK - There was a rise of 28% in pre-tax profits for the first half at Anglo Irish Bank, which is a leading player in the Irish SME sector. The bank boasts impressive growth and experienced a 43% boost in total income for this period. Anglo recently acquired Smurfit Paribas, the private Dublin bank, and this cost contributed heavily on the expense side. Anglo's plans include the establishment of a small corporate foreign exchange or trade finance office in the US by the end of the year. GREEN ISLE FOODS TO CREATE 190 NEW JOBS AT NAAS - Green Isle Foods will create 190 new jobs at its existing facility in Naas, Co. Kildare in a IR25m expansion programme. The frozen food manufacturer, owned by Northern Foods, will employ more than 1,000 people in Ireland when this latest recruitment drive is complete. The company's best known products are the Goodfella range of pizzas, and it has recently launched a new Full and Crispy Pizza Pie, with a marketing and advertising budget of IR2m. This investment represents the biggest development in pizza manufacturing in Europe and aims to inject further growth into the frozen pizza market. NEW TELECOMS LICENCES TO BE AWARDED IN JULY - Director of Telecommunications Regulations Etain Doyle has received 11 applications for the eight new telecoms licences. These licences, which will be awarded in July, will allow operators to transmit voice and Internet services to customer premises without using Telecom Eireann's local network. There were six applications for the four broadband licences and five for the narrowband licences. Narrowband licences are more suitable for the residential market, while broadband offer faster rates of Internet access and thus is aimed at the business sector. The term of the licences will be for 10 years, and a steering group has been established to assist in the evaluation of applications and selection process. PROCTER & GAMBLE TO CREATE 200 NEW JOBS AT NENAGH - Procter & Gamble, which is already the largest employer in Nenagh, with a current workforce of almost 400, will create an additional 200 new jobs at the Co. Tipperary plant. The increased employment will come as a result of the company's decision to close its facility at Wakefield in England and transfer operations to its Irish site. The decision was based on an ongoing feasibility study involving both plants, which showed that the Nenagh site was more economically viable. MONEX FINANCIAL SERVICES TO CREATE 36 JOBS IN KILLARNEY - Monex Financial Services Ltd is to create 36 new jobs in Killarney. The company, which specialises in foreign exchange credit card processing, has developed a multi-currency point-of-sale system in partnership with Ulster Bank, and its parent National Westminster Bank in the UK. A total of IR1.3m is to be invested in the Enterprise Ireland supported venture. OECD REPORT ISSUES WARNING ON IRISH ECONOMY - The Irish economy could be in danger of overheating, unless certain measures are taken by the Government, according to the biennial country report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In addition to signs of overheating and signs of excess demand, the report highlighted housing as one of the key problem areas and recommended the introduction of a number of taxation measures to control the property market. These included the reintroduction of residential property tax and abolishing mortgage interest relief, neither of which is likely to be implemented by any Irish Government. Other recommendations from the OECD report include the reintroduction of third-level fees, water charges, tolls on roads and the abolition of all entry restrictions to the taxi and bar trade. Minister for Finance Charlie McCreevy said that political realities preclude the acceptance of at least some of the measures. CRH EXPANDS OPERATIONS IN SCANDINAVIA - CRH, the giant Irish building materials company, has expanded operations in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe with the acquisition of Scanem's Finnsementti and Rudus subsidiaries in a deal worth IR327m. This is CRH's second biggest acquisition to date, and it follows the IR369m paid for the British brick manufacturer Ibstock last year. This new move will establish the Irish company in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Russia and Poland. UNEMPLOYMENT AT LOWEST LEVEL SINCE 1983 - As expected the number of people out of work had dipped below the 200,000 mark by the end of April. A total of 4,382 people left the live register during the month, bringing the total registered as out of work to 196,852. Seasonally adjusted the drop for the month was 2,300. The official unemployment percentage now stands at 6.7% and I am still awaiting an explanation from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment as to how this figure is calculated. SUPERQUINN AND TSB IN JOINT VENTURE - The Irish owned supermarket chain, Superquinn, and Trustee Savings Bank are forming a new joint venture bank, which will operate in the supermarket's 17 outlets nation-wide. The bank will be jointly owned by both partners, and the new financial institution will offer loans, mortgages, current accounts and credit card facilities. The bank, unlike most present financial institutions, will be open six days a week during shopping hours. This new venture is a significant departuren from the norm as not only will they be extending banking hours in Ireland, but the Superquinn initiative creates a fresh brand unlike the major British supermarkets which offer existing brand financial services. KILTIMAGH CLOTHING COMPANY TO CLOSE WITH THE LOSS OF 85 JOBS - The TJT Manufacturing plant in Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo, which was once owned by Farah, is to close in July with the loss of all 85 jobs. The plant was the subject of a management buy-out when Farah announced its decision to leave in 1997, but since then it has been subject to prolonged spells of short-time working. RCI TO CREATE 500 NEW JOBS IN CORK - Resort Condominiums International (RCI) is to create an additional 500 jobs at its Cork facility. The leisure and travel specialists currently employ 350 people in timeshare exchange holiday arrangements. In 1998 the company dealt with over six million people and has just established Cork as its new European base, with the transfer of all call centre operations from Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Denmark and Russia. RCI is part of the Cedant Corporation, which owns the Hertz car rental business and the Howard Johnson chain of hotels. Approximately 120 jobs will be created in the next four months, with the majority of the jobs coming on stream through the location alongside RCI operations of business teleservices for travel, real estate and alliance marketing customers. YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS SCHEME WINNERS ANNOUNCED - The winners of the Young Entrepreneurs Scheme were announced on Sunday by Tanaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Harney. In first place was Kings Hospital, Palmerstown, Dublin. Colaiste Eanna CBS in Ballyroan, Co. Laois, took second place and St Declan's Community College in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford came third. The awards were sponsored by Enterprise Ireland. GTE ENTERS IRISH MARKET THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH STENTOR - Stentor Communications, a subsidiary of Stentor Plc, and GTE Internetworking Inc, a business unit of GTE Corporation, one of the world's largest telecommunications companies, announced that Stentor has joined GTE's Net.Alliance partner programme. Through the Net.Alliance partnership Stentor will be able to provide customers with world-wide service through connection of its Irish Internet backbone to GTE's global Internet backbone. This will provide customers access to a recognised Internet access facility for the high-quality exchange of Internet traffic. (http://www.stentor.ie) IRISH SOFTWARE COMPANY IN PARTNERSHIP WITH UK MOBILE TELECOM COMPANY - Irish software communications company Infocell, and Britain's Dolphin Telecommunications plc, signed an agreement last year on the joint development of a UK Wide Digital Real-Time Passenger Information (RTPI) System over Dolphin's Tetra Network. Within the last two months, Dolphin and Infocell have successfully completed trials of the world's first RTPI data application on Dolphin's TETRA network. Infocell's passenger information system, called "Centurion", delivers real-time multi-media information services to the public transport sector. These services deliver accurate, reassuring and timely information allowing passengers to choose routes and select modes of transport. This information can be distributed to a wide array of outlets including on-street stops, buses, homes, offices and retail centres. > > > > > > > > > APPOINTMENTS < < < < < < < < < CIARON NELIS APPOINTED NEW BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER FOR ONIVA - Oniva has announced the appointment of Ciaron Nelis as Business Development Manager. Traditionally law graduates planning to become barristers or solicitors sat an entrance exam to the IPLS and only the top 90 students won a place in the Institute. The case taken by the two graduates centres on the fact that at any one time up to 300 graduates could be in contention for the places and the cut-off point left many well qualified law graduates without professional recognition. A judicial review of the practice has now been granted. UNIVERSITY TO HONOUR CHURCH LEADERS - The Church of Ireland primate Archbishop Robin Eames and the retired Catholic primate Cardinal Cahal Daly are to be conferred with honorary degrees from the University of Exeter later this year. A spokesperson for the University said the church leaders would be awarded with their degrees in November to mark the contribution they each had made to the process of peace and reconciliation in the North. QUEEN'S HONORARY GRADUANDS 1999 - Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Dr Mo Mowlam, First Minister David Trimble and Deputy First Minister Seamus Mallon are among those on whom Queen's University is to confer honorary degrees in 1999. SDLP leader John Hume, with whom Mr Trimble was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, and whose honorary degree from Queen's was announced in 1995, will also receive his award this year. Degrees will also be conferred on acclaimed actor and director Simon Callow, writer Edna O'Brien, Head of Granada and Chairman of the Arts Council in Britain Gerry Robinson and Dr Brendan O'Regan, founder and President of Co-operation Ireland. For the complete list see: http://www.qub.ac.uk/ LOCAL FIRMS MUST BE MORE SELF-RELIANT - PROFESSOR BAIN - Local firms need to develop greater self-reliance if the North's economy is to prosper, according to Queen's University vice-chancellor Professor George Bain who was speaking at the annual dinner of the Institute of Bankers. Professor Bain told his audience that the future of the North's economy must be private-sector rather than public-sector driven. "Public expenditure in Northern Ireland", he said, "makes up about 55% of the gross domestic product compared with 40% for the United Kingdom as a whole. Public sector employment comprises about 32% of total employment in the North compared with 21% for the United Kingdom as a whole". This public sector dependency, he argued, is one of the major factors which hamper the development of an entrepreneurial culture and contribute to a relative lack of enterprise. Professor Bain also urged local firms to take a more international approach, and referred to the role of the North's two universities in this respect. Mr Brosnan, a UCC graduate, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Law for his role in the successful development of Kerry Group. Mr Tracy, who was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Law, expressed his gratitude to UCC for acknowledging his attempts to reconcile the North's unionist and nationalist communities. Fr Good, described by UCC Professor Aine Hyland as "a man of courage of whom UCC was proud" said he was delighted to be honoured by his native city. He left to work in Kenya many years ago rather than retract comments Humanae Vitae which did not meet with the approval of the then Bishop, Dr Lucey. HILLARY CLINTON CONFERRED WITH HONORARY DEGREE BY NUI, GALWAY - First Lady of the United States Hillary Rodham Clinton, was conferred with an honorary Doctorate of Laws degree (LID) by NUI, Galway earlier today (Wednesday). Mrs Clinton was in Galway to deliver the inaugural lecture in the university's Millennium Lecture series which marks 150 years of student enrolment. The prestigious ceremony was attended by several academic luminaries including the Chancellor of the National University of Ireland and former Taoiseach Garrett Fitzgerald, pro-vice chancellor of NUI and UCD president, Dr Art Cosgrove, and Dr John Nolan, Registrar of the NUI. During his introduction, university President Dr Patrick Fottrell extended a particular welcome to Galway-native Brigid Dirrane who at 104-years-old, is believed to be the world's oldest university graduate. During her address entitled, "Our obligations to Each Other: the Continuing Quest for Peace", Mrs Clinton referred particularly to the Irish peace process and how encouraged she had been when she had visited the North on previous trips. The First Lady said the White House had also initiated a lecture series to celebrate the Millennium with the theme, "Honour the past: Imagine the future", this theme, she said, could also be translated as a motto for the Northern peacemakers. Although Mrs Clinton did refer to the "difficult" situation in Kosovo, she did not elaborate on the NATO campaign in the Balkans. DERRY STUDENT WINS TOP PRIZE IN INTEL-SPONSORED "SCIENCE OLYMPICS" - A 19-year-old Derry student has today won a top award in the contest described as the 'Olympics of science fairs,' the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Philadelphia. Ravi Samura, a student at Foyle and Londonderry College, created an invention that not only won first prize in the engineering category and $3k, but has also helped a textile company to reduce its 'downtime.' Ravi designed a 'sinker sorting device' after a visit to the local 'Fruit of the Loom' textile plant. The solution he designed has resulted in a 46% reduction in downtime for the weaving company, and, he says, makes the work less tedious. The student, who intends to apply for a patent, plans to go to the University of Manchester.
