The Irish Technology Career Expo, organised by IT Staffing Ltd, will showcase job opportunities in Ireland and provide hi-tech professionals with a complete overview of what is required to relocate to Ireland. Featuring more than 50 of the top Irish-based hi-tech companies in Ireland, covering the spectrum of software, hardware, and electronics, the Expo is expected to attract more than 10,000 visitors. In addition to being of interest to Irish nationals thinking of returning home, the Expo will highlight opportunities for US citizens who wish to gain valuable experience in another country. See http://www.ITireland.com GOVERNMENT EASES WORK PERMIT RULES FOR CERTAIN SKILLS - Recognising the skills shortages in certain areas, the Government has decided to make it easy for non EU-nationals with key skills to obtain work permits. Employers who wish to transfer existing staff to Ireland need only submit a letter to the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment saying that they are doing so. Foreigners can also work here for up to three years, without any difficulty, if their employment is deemed to be training and development. Others who will benefit are the spouses of Irish citizens and the parents of Irish-born children. It is hoped that by removing these categories from the existing procedure a bottle neck will be eliminated and individual applications from people with key skills will be processed much more quickly that the two months it currently takes. IONICS OF MASSACHUSETTS TO CREATE 60 NEW TELESALES JOBS FOR GALWAY - US multinational Ionics will create 60 new jobs over the next four years when it opens a European telesales and support centre at Ballybane in Galway. Ionics, based in Watertown, Massachusetts, is a manufacturer of bottled water and systems to treat water for use in both the domestic and industrial sectors. The jobs, in marketing, technical support and administration, are expected to provide high-quality employment for people across a range of qualifications, especially those with European languages. The US company employs 2,200 people world-wide and had revenues of $351m in 1998. LOTUS IRELAND LAUNCHES RELEASE 5 OF NOTES, DOMINO AND DOMINO DESIGNER - Lotus Development Ireland staged an impressive launch of R5 - Release 5 of Notes, Domino and Domino Designer - before an invited audience of customers, business partners and media at the Berkeley Court Hotel on Tuesday. Using the slogan "super.human.software", Lotus speakers outlined many of the thousands of enhancements in this latest version of what they described as "the world's leading products for information management, messaging, collaboration and Web application development". One of the speakers was Stephen Brewer, chief executive of Eircell, who announced that his company would be introducing Domino 5 for email and Web applications as part of a policy of "using leading edge technology internally to enhance the service and support we provide to our customers". Since April 28 the Lotus facility in Dublin has been shipping R5 to the whole of EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa). R5 is available for download from http://www.lotus.com/r5 EXPORTS RISE BY 27% IN 1998 - Exports rose by 27% in 1998, reaching IR44.78bn and putting Ireland into the top 20 exporting nations, according to the World Trade Organisation. Britain still remains the principal exports market, receiving IR8.8bn worth of trade. Germany is the second major destination, and the US is our third biggest market, worth IR6.1bn, an increase of 54%. Computers and chemicals are the strongest sector of the export market. LIMERICK AREA PLAN FORECASTS THE CREATION OF 1,200 JOBS - Limerick Corporation has predicted the creation of 1,200 new jobs with an investment of IR20m for the city. The Integrated Area Plan, approved by the Department of the Environment, plans to develop new office, shop, commercial and tourism ventures. The local authority has already received more than 70 submissions and will focus on 63 locations within the city. BANK OF IRELAND RECORDS 24% RISE IN PRE-TAX PROFITS - Bank of Ireland reported a 24% rise in pre-tax profits for the year ending March 1999. Profits before tax stand at IR831m and include the sale of its US Citizens operations for IR172m last year. Strong profit growth in both domestic and international banking, as well as the life assurance and stockbroking sectors, contributed greatly to the year's performance. The bank's Irish retail operations accounted for IR253m of the profits. NUMBER OF PEOPLE AT WORK TOPS 1.5 MILLION - Within days of the publication of the monthly unemployment statistics, which showed that the number of people on the live register had dipped below the 200,000 mark by the end of April, other more relevant statistics came from the Central Statistics Office. The CSO's quarterly household survey, for the September/November quarter of 1998, revealed that the actual number of people unemployed and seeking work stood at 106,000. This was 65,000 fewer than a year earlier. At the same time the number of people at work increased by 72,000 to 1.55m. The quarterly household survey is recognised as the most accurate measure of the level of unemployment but no one has ever adequately explained why the other 90,000 plus are collecting unemployment support payments. BUSINESSES LOSING AS A RESULT OF TRAFFIC CONGESTION - According to Pat Delaney, director of the Small Firms Association, traffic congestion is damaging the Irish economy and is responsible for millions of lost hours every year. Traffic delays are resulting in the loss of productivity for smaller businesses, and transport costs are increasing to account for delays at Dublin Port and such places. FORMER FINANCIER FINBARR ROSS APPEARS IN COURT - Cork-born Finbarr Ross has appeared in court on 41 charges relating to the collapse of his company, International Investments Ltd (IIL), in 1984. Saturday's court appearance followed the extradition of Ross from Denver, Colorado, to Belfast. Finbarr Ross now faces 41 charges relating to alleged false accounting and obtaining and procuring property by deception. BERRY'S PRINTING OF WESTPORT SOLD FOR IR7M - Berry's Printing, one of Ireland's largest independent printing companies, has been sold to the UK-based Field Corporation for IR7m. The company is based in Westport, Co. Mayo where it employs 130 people and reported a turnover of IR6.8m last year. Field Corporation was recently acquired by US giant Chesapeake, which now has 55 facilities world-wide, and this latest Irish acquisition will support the development of its European manufacturing network. INCREASE IN IRISH ADVERTISING MEDIA EXPENDITURE - Media expenditure by Irish advertising increased by 18% in the first quarter of 1999. Money spent advertising on television, radio and in the newspapers totalled IR85m so far this year. Television revenue rose 22%, representing IR26.6m to RTE and IR2.3m on the new TV3 station for the first quarter. Advertising on national newspapers increased by 17% to IR32m, while local papers saw an 8% drop. Magazine advertising revenue also suffered a drop, but Dublin radio stations experienced a huge surge of approximately 28%. Outdoor advertising increased by 54% while the cinema revenue decreased by 13%. SECOND QUARTER EARNINGS INCREASE AT HEWLETT-PACKARD - Hewlett-Packard, which employs more than 1,000 people in Leixlip, Co. Kildare, reported a 34% increase in second quarter net earnings to $918m. Both projects are supported by IDA investment of IR8m in total. TAOISEACH HELPS MICROSOFT TO "SHIP" IRISH-PRODUCED SOFTWARE TO WORLD - Last week Taoiseach Bertie Ahern visited Microsoft's European Product Development Centre in Sandyford to help officially "sign off" on code for the latest version of the company's flagship productivity software, Office 2000. Bob Herbold, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Microsoft Corporation, also joined the celebrations via live video-conference "to acknowledge the great work done by Microsoft's staff in Ireland". The Desktop Applications Division, a team of over 300 Microsoft staff located here, were charged with creating localised versions of Office 2000 in 21 languages for Microsoft's European, Latin American and global French speaking markets. Speaking at the sign off, the Taoiseach said: "You should be proud, as I am, of your latest success in developing Office 2000 here in Ireland for Microsoft's world-wide markets. This is another opportunity to show that Ireland can be a world leader, just as Microsoft is". Responding for Microsoft Mr Herbold said, "We greatly appreciate the superb relationship we have with the Irish Government, and the fine work of the Irish and international workforce currently releasing Microsoft's new Office 2000 productivity software for Europe". Net sales increased by 30% to $23.5m over the same period in 1998 while net income rose by 11.5% to $2.9m, including a one-time charge of $1.2m after tax. A spokesman attributed the positive outcome to "the strong demand for Cybex' KVM switch products which rose 33% to $21.2m and accounted for 90% of fourth quarter sales. For the full year net sales increased by 56% to $82.2m while income rose 64% to $13.6m. AIR FOYLE ACQUIRES STAKE IN CITYJET - CityJet, the Irish airline, has just completed a deal worth IR8m which will see the British based Air Foyle acquire a majority shareholding in the company. CityJet, which has an annual turnover of IR40m, has been making a loss until now, but the new deal also sees Air France taking a 25% holding in the company. CityJet employs 350 people and operates 56 flights a week between Dublin and Paris, but this new deal, as well as changing the firm's shareholding structure, should see the airline begin to make a small profit. LAUNCH OF INTERNET ACCESS VIA SATELLITE - Dublin based Armstrong Satellite Data Service Ltd will launch the first of a new generation of low-cost, high-speed two-way Internet services via satellite. The new service, Web-Sat, will be available throughout Europe in June of this year. Using EUTELSAT, the service will effectively be a permanent two-way circuit designed to eliminate delay in logging-on, downloading large files or just surfing the net. The key feature of Web-Sat is the virtual permanent connection, and it will be similar to being on a Local Area Network. The product will be launched at this year's Cable and Satellite Mediacast. IONA TECHNOLOGIES AND SYMANTEC CORPORATION IN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP - IONA Technologies, the Nasdaq-quoted Irish middleware company, has announced a new strategic partnership with Symantec Corporation, a leading provider of corporate Internet development solutions. See http://www.iona.com ESAT TELECOM ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER RESULTS - The Esat Telecom Group announced a net loss of IR28.4m for the first quarter of 1999. Revenue for the period increased by 192% to IR12.4m. Overall the results reflect not only the significant fluctuation in the US$/IR exchange rate, but also the continued investment in the development of the telecommunications infrastructure. Commenting on the Group's results, Chairman and Chief Executive, Mr Denis O'Brien said: "We are particularly pleased with the growth in our customer numbers which we believe is a reflection on the range and quality of the integrated voice, data and Internet applications which Esat Telecom now offers. This growth has resulted in the earlier than anticipated requirement to increase the network capacity by the planned installation of a DWDN high-speed network". NORTEL NETWORKS SELECTS GALWAY AS GLOBAL MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS HOUSE - Last Thursday Nortel Networks unveiled details of the global operations strategy it announced in January - "A three-year plan designed to make the company more agile, flexible, and responsive to an increasingly competitive environment". Arising from the plan are seven global "systems houses", including the operations in Galway, which employs 900 staff, and Monkstown on the outskirts of Belfast. Electromechanical operations in Monkstown are, however, being offered for divestiture as part of a programme which will see 4,000 people leave Nortel Networks world-wide, with 3,000 being transferred to contract manufacturing companies. Another 1,000 jobs are expected to be eliminated but the number affected will be minimised as a result of attrition and relocation to other Nortel facilities. The company expects savings in the range of $250m-$300m per year when the operations strategy is implemented. There is no impact on the other Nortel Networks site in Shannon, where 80 staff are employed. See http://www.nortelnetworks.com MCI WORLDCOM WINS RTE TELECOMS CONTRACT - MCI WorldCom, the international telecommunications company, has announced that it has been awarded a contract to supply all of the national broadcaster RTE's local, national and international telephony requirements. Calls to North America will be reduced by up to 21%, while calls to the UK will be cut by 16%. There will however be an IR0.29 increase in line rental, which translates into a IR4m rise in revenue per annum. This move comes at a time of increased competition in the Irish telecoms market, with the recent sale of CableLink to the US owned NTL, the growing strength of the Esat Telecom Group and the imminent public flotation of Telecom Iireann - all good news for the customer. The teleconference link allowed Mr Sheane to communicate with the Director of Media Technology for the Welsh Development Agency in Cardiff, Patrick Sullivan and Tom Baxter-Wright, Chairman of the TRESP Welsh Steering Committee. The TRESP initiative aims to develop and test new approaches and supports which will allow the development of an integrated model to help service businesses grow in the future. It is envisaged that the model developed under this project will be suitable for application throughout the European Union.
