The two banks issued a statement this morning confirming the deal which had already been reported in the Irish Times. Keppel TatLee is Singapore's fifth largest bank and AIB becomes the first foreign institution to invest in the country's banking sector since independence in 1965. AIB chief executive Tom Mulcahy described the deal as an "alliance" which will participate in the deregulation of Singapore's financial sector. The move follows confirmation of merger talks between Bank of Ireland and the British bank, Alliance & Leicester about which little has been said in recent days. Bank of Ireland shares which reached IR15.99 nine days ago, when news of the possible deal broke, have continued to slip back gently and closed today at IR13.54. NCB STOCKBROKERS LOSES SEVEN SENIOR EXECUTIVES - Seven top executives have left the Ulster Bank-owned NCB Stockbrokers to form their own finance house, Merrion Capital. While the move was obviously already in the planning stages, it all happened rather abruptly after a reported row between NCB's deputy managing director John Conroy and his recently appointed boss Conor O'Kelly. That happened on Tuesday morning and by lunchtime Mr Conroy and six senior colleagues had cleared their desks and left the building at the IFSC. Among the others who have departed are Pat Landy, head of corporate finance; Shane Nolan, head of equity research; and Barry Connell, head of equity sales. The development is seen as a major blow for NCB but it could have been worse, and could still become more serious, as it is suggested that the seven were in discussions with about a dozen other senior colleagues at NCB. ENTERPRISE IRELAND TO ADOPT CLIENT CENTRED APPROACH - On behalf of Tanaiste Mary Harney, Paul Haran, Secretary General of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment launched the Enterprise Ireland Strategy for the development of Irish business 1999-2001. Mr Haran said that Enterprise Ireland is reorienting to become a client-focused agency which will help indigenous business to expand in international markets, harness new technologies, deepen their R&D capability; and develop their staff. At the launch Dan Flinter CEO of Enterprise Ireland said, "Our priority is to assist growth oriented companies in the process of business development, internationalisation and innovation" with a focus on "solutions and service rather than programmes or products". He added that the vision is that locally controlled businesses trading internationally will have doubled their sales from IR20bn to IR40bn in ten years. BAXTER TO CREATE JOBS IN CASTLEBAR AND DUBLIN - Baxter Ireland, a subsidiary of Baxter International, is expanding its facility at Castlebar and will create 220 new jobs. The company is also investing IR5m in its facility in nearby Swinford to supply the Japanese market. In a further development, the company is also setting up a European shared services centre in Dublin, where it will employ an additional 80 people. ... AND CASTLEBAR ALSO WINS 150 JOBS WITH NEW CALL CENTRE - There was more good news for Castlebar as it was announced that the British-based Cedar Group will establish a financial services call centre there employing 150 people. Cedar Group develops and supplies computer and call centre software solutions to business organisations. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Mary Harney said that the new projects mean that over 1,000 new jobs are currently being created in eight IDA Ireland-backed projects in Co. Mayo. MODUS MEDIA TO CREATE 200 NEW JOBS IN LIMERICK AND KILDARE - Modus Media International, a global provider of outsourced supplies and technology services for the IT industry, will create 200 new jobs in the next year as part of a IR12m expansion plan. Half the positions will be at a new Customer Solutions Centre on the National Technological Park in Limerick and the balance will be added to the company's existing operation in Kildare. This will bring Modus Media's total workforce in Dublin, Kildare and Limerick to more than 1,000. The expansion is linked to the growth in output from the company's clients which include Dell Computer, Microsoft and IBM. RECKITT & COLMAN TO OPEN EUROPEAN SHARED SERVICES CENTRE IN DUBLIN - Reckitt & Colman, a major producer of household cleaning and over the counter pharmaceutical products, has chosen Dublin as the site for a new European Shared Services Centre which will lead to the creation of 70 jobs. The British-based company already employs 109 staff at a manufacturing site in Castlebellingham, Co. Louth and a sales office in Dublin. NEW REPORT PUTS IRELAND IN TOP FIVE FOR MANUFACTURING INVESTMENT - Ireland is the fourth most popular destination in Europe and the sixth most popular world-wide in terms of US manufacturing investment. A recent report on US investment published by Ernst & Young also shows that Ireland has become the country most favoured by investors per capita. The report studies the years 1995-1997 and shows that Ireland benefited from 68 projects, 66% of which were plant expansions. 15% INCREASE IN PRE-TAX PROFITS AT AER RIANTA - Aer Rianta reported a 15% rise in pre-tax profits to IR52.3m for 1998. Turnover was up by 8% to IR266.4m, from IR246.8m in 1997. As well as managing Irish airports, Aer Rianta also operates the Great Southern Hotel chain, and manages duty-free shops in Russia, Asia, the UK, Germany and the Channel Tunnel. However chief executive John Burke warned that the upcoming abolition of duty-free sales within the EU will affect profits for the coming years. RISE OF 15% IN PROFITS FOR NAVAN CARPETS - Navan Carpets announced a 15% rise in pre-tax profits to IR589k for 1998. Turnover increased by 8% to IR13.8m. These favourable figures have been attributed to the booming housing market and a growing export trade to the United States. The company has been doing well following a staff buyout in 1995, after a number of changes in ownership in the previous years. Navan Carpets had originally been part of the Youghal Carpet Group and moved first to British hands and then American, before the staff buyout. RYANAIR ACHIEVES RECORD PROFITS - Ryanair announced record pre-tax profits of IR59.7m in the year to the end of March, up from IR48.4m in 1997. Revenues also increased from IR182.6m to IR232.9m. A company spokesman forecast that airfares will continue to fall and denied speculation that the end of duty-free will lead to price increases. Ryanair carried almost five million passengers in 1998, and plans to increase that figure to six million for 1999. The company has a number of new routes in the pipeline, but has no plans for expansion from Dublin until agreement has been reached with Aer Rianta. The two are in dispute over landing charges, which Ryanair claims are very expensive compared with other European airports. As the results were announced it was also revealed that some major shareholders are disposing of large volumes of shares. The Ryan family is reducing its stake from 27.6% to 17.1% and should make up to IR117m in the process. CEO Michael O'Leary is relinquishing about 10% of his holding for about IR17m. This news seemed to offset the good results in the eyes of investors and the share price slipped a little. GREENCORE ANNOUNCES 7% RISE IN PRE-TAX PROFITS - Greencore, the Irish agribusiness group, announced a 7% rise in pre-tax profits to IR27.1m for the six months to March 26 1999. Turnover was up 27% to IR337m. Chief executive David Dilger said that the group plans to increase its pace of acquisitions. AIB LAUNCHES WEBSITE FOR TREASURY MANAGERS & FINANCIAL PROFESSIONALS - AIB Corporate and Commercial Treasury has launched its "FX Centre" interactive website to provide its customers with a secure direct electronic link to AIB's treasury dealing room. The intention is to help streamline the processing and management of clients' Foreign Exchange transactions. With "FX Centre pro" foreign exchange deals can be confirmed within ten minutes of completing the transaction with AIB's dealing teams which, according to the bank, reduces the risk of errors, provides greater efficiency and eliminates the need for paper confirmations. The site also provides up to the minute business news. See http://www.fxcentre.com DAIRYGOLD PLANNING IR4M INVESTMENT - Dairygold Food Products is planning a IR4m capital investment programme at its cheese making facilities in Co. Cork. This investment will also include the launch of a new range of products. The company hopes the new products and investment plan will increase turnover in its cheese division by 29% over the next five years. The money will be invested in new line equipment to provide high speed and high volume production at its facilities in Mitchelstown. Dairygold currently owns five cheese brands with annual turnover of IR28m, representing about 40% of the total Irish cheese market. GOVERNMENT MAY NOW SELL A 45% STAKE OF TELECOM EIREANN IN FLOTATION - There has been so much public interest in the upcoming flotation of Telecom Eireann that the Government is now considering offering up to 45% of the company for sale. By 5:30pm on Friday approximately 1.15m people had registered their interest in acquiring shares, which showed a much greater demand than had been anticipated. The Government owns just over 50% of Telecom Eireann, and had initially planned to offer 35% in the public flotation, but now that figure may be increased to 45% to meet public demand. The Minister for Public Enterprise, Mary O'Rourke, is particularly keen that as many shares as possible are given to the pubLic, and it is now likely that the split will be 60% to the public and 40% to institutions. The prospectus for the flotation is now understood to be almost complete. TAYTO EXPECTED TO FETCH IN EXCESS OF IR100M - Tayto, the well-known manufacturer of crisps and snack foods, has been put up for sale by US owner TLC Beatrice and is expected to fetch over IR100m. This move comes after much speculation and offers have already been made. TLC Beatrice said that it plans to sell off all remaining assets, including Tayto, and then liquidate. It is thought that Cantrell & Cochrane, Walkers Crisps and IAWS are among the likely bidders. It is understood at least one large venture capital fund may also consider bidding. MCINERNEY PLANS TO KEEP ON BUILDING - McInerney, the building and construction company, has announced that it plans to spend IR7.6m on further land purchases in Dublin and Cork in the coming months. This additional land will allow the company to build a further 1,000 houses next year, compared with the 650 planned for this year. Chairman Roy Ferris also said that the company had plans to expand into the British market, and the annual meeting heard how housing demand was expected to continue at the same level for the foreseeable future. He said the company did not favour dramatic increases in prices and would rather "a slow, steady market". One of the biggest constraints on the company's growth at present was planning bottlenecks and the planning regulations. POWERSCREEN DENIES TAKEOVER RUMOURS - A take-over of the Dungannon-based Powerscreen by US engineering firm Terex has been denied. The company is seriously considering two options at the moment, one of which is a takeover, but not by a US-based company. It was rumoured that Terex is interested in adding Powerscreen to its European operations. The company may also be looking at the possibility of a management buy out. H&K INTERNATIONAL EXPANDS IN AUSTRALIA - H&K International, the Dublin-based designer and manufacturer of stainless steel commercial kitchen equipment, is to establish new offices and distribution facilities in Sydney. This new expansion in Australia has been facilitated by the securing of contracts worth IR2.5m, and a number of staff have already been transferred to Sydney to establish the new operation. H&K supplies stainless steel kitchen equipment to McDonald's restaurants in over 60 countries, as well as a number of other restaurant chains. AIRTEL ATN WINS MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SOFTWARE CONTRACT IN US - Airtel ATN has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by ARINC Inc. under which the Dun Laoghaire-based company will develop and supply software to ARINC to form what is described as a vital part of the first commercial deployment of an Aeronautical Telecommunication Network (ATN). The ARINC network represents the first substantial investment in an operational network employing ATN, the emerging communication technology for the aviation industry, and was secured against strong international competition. Commenting on the announcement, Frank O'Connor of Airtel said: "This is a significant development for the company and consolidates our leading position in aviation communications technology". Airtel ATN is an independent software developer and supplier of data communications solutions for the aviation industry. - see: http://www.airtel-atn.com NEW DIRECTORY INQUIRY SERVICE - A former Telecom Eireann employee has established a new independent directory inquiry service at 11850. In advertisements the company, Conduit Europe, says it aims to give us "the most efficient, economical, and accurate service possible". On Monday I had occasion to phone directory inquiries for a recently issued number and, after hearing the busy tone on the Telecom Eireann service three or four times, I looked up the Conduit number and managed to get through at the first try and was given the number with minimum delay. REVENUE COMMISSIONERS RECRUITING STAFF TO IMPLEMENT NEW POWERS - With the Revenue Commissioners now having additional powers to investigate possible tax evasion, 37 extra staff are being recruited to make sure that the new powers are utilised. Among the new staff will be five professional accountants and two solicitors. Much of the increased auditing will be within financial institutions and large corporations. In announcing this Dermot Quigley, chairman of the Revenue Commissioners, said that they will try to use the additional powers responsibly. This will mean informing a taxpayer that his or her bank account is to be audited, although such prior notice isn't necessary under the law. THE REAL LEVEL OF UNEMPLOYMENT - The Dail Public Accounts Committee has been taking an interest in the enormous discrepancy between those claiming to be seeking employment in the Quarterly National Household Survey, and the number collecting unemployment support on the Live Register. In February the latter figure was more than 100,000 higher than that suggested by the survey. The committee came up with a number of possible reasons including part-time workers claiming benefit, people on FAS training programmes and those on pre-retirement allowance. In the end committee chairman Jim Mitchell accepted that there appear to be at least 58,000 people making fraudulent claims or there is an explanation which no one has yet considered. Three key Government departments - Finance, Social Welfare and Enterprise Trade and Employment - have been given three months to suggest ways to improve the measurement of the number out of work. ACCBANK STAFF END BAN ON CO-OPERATION WITH MERGER ACTIVITIES - Following conciliatory comments from Matt Barrett, recently appointed chairman of NEWBank, staff at ACCBank are again co-operating in the completion of tasks required to facilitate the merger with TSB. The problem arose when it was decided that NEWBank would use the computer systems currently in operation with TSB. While the dispute continued there was a mass movement of ACCBank staff from the ATGWU union to SIPTU. > > > > > > > > > APPOINTMENTS < < < < < < < < < SEAN DONLON TO JOIN BOARD OF ENBA PLC - Enba plc, the recently established Dublin-based holding company which is preparing to launch online Internet financial services in Europe, has announced the appointment of Sean Donlon as a non-executive director. Mr Donlon was formerly Special Adviser to Taoiseach John Bruton, from 1994 to 1997. Prior to that he served as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland's Ambassador to the United States and as Consul General in Boston, having worked with the Irish Diplomatic Service for 25 years. It was also revealed that, almost without exception, prisoners are early school-leavers, many of whom never attended school higher than primary or special school level. According to the Community Office at Dublin City University the problems behind these statistics can be tackled by a broader and more flexible access to education and training. The concept of taking the university beyond its walls has been central to the aspirations of the DCU Community Office which has initiated the DCU North Dublin Education Forum to facilitate access to education for the community in that part of the city. The Forum believes that a formal learning network will facilitate individuals, communities, commercial enterprise, industry and services to identify and articulate needs within education and training in North Dublin. The Community Office at DCU hosted the Building Learning Networks Conference on Thursday last, May 27. Film director Stephen Spielberg, European Commission President Romano Prodi and the wife of the late King Hussein, Queen Noor of Jordan, were also honoured at the ceremony. ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY ALLIANCE LAUNCHED AT NUI, GALWAY - A new co-operative initiative by the three universities on the Atlantic seaboard was launched on Monday. NUI, Galway, UCC and UL have formed the Atlantic University Alliance which will provide an integrated approach to assist the economies of the western, mid-western, and southern regions. The project stems from a recent study undertaken by the three Universities on the technology needs and resources of the regions in which they are located. The objective of the AUA is to facilitate the effective transfer and commercialisation of technology within industry and between industry and university. The study documents a clear need for technology and management training to be made available to companies in these regions and a programme to promote inter-regional technology has been formulated. The intent of this programme is to harness the collective strengths and resources of NUI, Galway, UCC, and UL to facilitate innovation within companies and to meet the technology and management training requirements of industry, especially indigenous industry within the three regions served by the Universities. ENGINEERING COURSES MUST BE REVISED - CIT CONFERENCE TOLD - Dr Caroline Baillie, a lecturer in education development at Imperial College, London has warned that engineering courses in third-level colleges need to be revised to combat the high drop-out rate in this area. Speaking at the National Council for Educational seminar at Cork Institute of Technology last week, Dr Baillie advised third- level institutions to run short introduction courses so students know what they are committing themselves to. Her argument was supported by CIT student president Tim Clifford, who said the methodology of engineering teaching was outmoded. "It is regrettable", he commented, "that in many areas students are still being trained in major portions of their course using drawing boards when industry uses the latest technology. The situation of drop-outs will not change until there is more investment in facilities for engineering students". NEW BOOK ON DERRY AND LONDONDERRY EDITED BY UU HISTORIAN - A group of historians from throughout Ireland are among the contributors to a new book which has just been published on Derry City and County Londonderry. Entitled 'Derry and Londonderry: History and Society', the book has been edited by Magee College historian Gerard O'Brien. In the publication Dr O'Brien brings together a series of authors who look at traditional historical issues such as archaeology, the siege and emigration. But the book also includes more modern aspects from history such as housing segregation up until 1991, social change and collective action in the '60's, and the controversy over the siting of a "second university" in the city. For more information see http://www.ulst.ac.uk UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES STG2M RESEARCH PROJECTS - The University of Ulster has announced details of its latest range of research projects which have attracted more than Stg2m in funding. Among the issues to be researched will be the possible problems faced by controlled schools which decide to become integrated, the attitudes of the public in the North to genetic testing and how consumers view convenience food. The Nuffield Foundation has asked researchers at UU to look at the issues faced by controlled schools, which traditionally have a population of Protestant pupils, when they decide to become integrated. Dr Alan Smith, from the University's School of Education, is leading the work in partnership with Dr Tony Gallagher at Queen's University, Belfast. Another of the research projects, led by Gillian Robinson, will look at the issue of genetic testing and how it is viewed in the North. The Consumer Studies department has begun a three-year study to consider the factors impacting upon chilled food product development within the current retailing environment on the island of Ireland. This project will be headed by Heather McIlveen. For further information see http://www.ulst.ac.uk KILTIMAGH TO BECOME SUB-CAMPUS OF NUI, GALWAY - I.R.D.
