IRSP: Killer of IRSP Comrade Hessie Phelan Convicted Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source: irsp@netwizards.net Wed Apr 28 05:26:13 1999 21 April 1999 Killer of IRSP Comrade Hessie Phelan Convicted The Irish Republican Socialist Party's International Department welcomed today's verdict in the Hessie Phelan murder trial. The six week trial of New York police officer Richard Molloy ended with his having been found guilty of second-degree manslaughter. Justice has been served, and seen to be served, in a prompt, even urgent manner. We commend the fortitude of Hessie family, friends, and comrades. They fought long and hard to achieve the justice which today's verdict has returned. At this moment, upon hearing of our thoughts at this moment, having witnessed a chink of armour of the American justice system, we are mindful of others seeking justice from American courts. Let this encourage the campaigners for justice for Mumia Abu-Jamal, as he sits on death row, to keep on fighting as the Phelan family did. Likewise to the supporters of John McNicholl in Pennsylvania, hold on and keep fighting, we say. Members of the United States Congress are preparing to back an independent inquiry into the slaying of Rosemary Nelson in the occupied six counties of Ireland. Perhaps they are willing to also suggest an independent review be undertaken to investigate the framing of Mumia by the Philadelphia police as well. Perhaps they will advocate that an independent review of the INS be undertaken to find out what motivated the witch-hunt of John McNicholl. Clearly the sectarian Royal Ulster Constabulary cannot be trusted to investigate a case in which their members may have been participants, but it is dubious whether the Philadelphia police are likely to be relied upon to review their own behaviour, or whether the Immigration and Nationalisation Service could be relied upon to investigate itself either. Nonetheless, the Hessie's comrades in the Irish Republican Socialist Movement find some comfort for the loss of their friend and comrade at the hands of one of New York City's killer cops through the verdict handed down by the court. Our sincere condolenses are extended to the family and friends who must still bear the sense of loss brought about by his murder, and our sincere gratitude to all those who helped wage this pursuit of justice.
