NATO says the raids will continue until President Milosevic begins to implement the key points in the peace deal. The West likes to see this as a victory, a cave-in by Milosevic after more than ten weeks of punishing air strikes, and the threat of ground action, but how is this deal being seen in Yugoslavia? According to the Serbs, the document "reaffirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yugoslavia and disables a terrorist and separatist activity". The latter is a description of the Kosova Liberation Army, which claims not to have been consulted in this deal. SDLP leader John Hume will test the strength of the nationalist vote in his bid to top the poll, beating the traditional front runner Ian Paisley. He, in turn, wants to use a high personal vote as proof of anti-agreement opinion. And David Trimble's political future could depend on the ability of his candidate Jim Nicholson to retain his seat, in the face of personal difficulties, and the challenge from Sinn Fein. The campaign could have a significant effect on the chances of a peace deal being agreed by the end of the month. David Trimble has made a fresh offer to republicans to "jump together" in achieving that deal, he will name potential ministers and then await decommissioning by paramilitaries before proceeding. There has been a cool response from Sinn Fein, they will have a chance to tell Mr Trimble what they think about this proposal at a meeting at Stormont this morning. But if Sinn Fein takes the third Euro seat, unseating the Ulster Unionist's Jim Nicholson, could Mr Trimble survive long as leader? And what if anti agreement unionist candidates turn out to be in the majority?
