The Catalpa Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit ............................................................... source - jamesam@admin.con2.com (Pat Jameson- & Gary Sammartano) A chara, Anybody who's interested in the Catalpa can also find some great material on it in Terry Golway's 1998 bio of John Devoy, _Irish Rebel_.(St. Martin's Press) This is a fabulous book on the subject of Devoy, Fenianism, and the diaspora. I heartily recommend it to anyone teaching the history of the Irish in America. It's a scholarly biography that reads like a screenplay. If I were teaching a 19th Century American history course, I would use this biography as a course reading; it reinforces for me the idea that the more I study Irish history, the more I learn about American history. The author is a former college professor at CUNY's College of Staten Island and a journalist for the New York Observer. Much of his research was done at the American Irish Historical Society; he's also a member of the New York Irish History Roundtable, and has presented before both groups. He also presented before the United Federation of Teachers, which was where I first met him.
