First results in local elections 2. Little change in Euro seats 3. Three held in connection with Finn disappearance plus Ireland's Weather FIRST RESULTS IN LOCAL ELECTIONS --------------------------------------------------------------- Counting is now well under way in the local elections and so far, 31 candidates have been elected: 19 of them to the four councils in Dublin, two to Galway county council, four to Waterford county council, one to Waterford city council, three to Westmeath and two to Tipperary South. Of those seats, twelve have gone to Fianna Fail, seven to Fine Gael, four to Labour, three each to Sinn Fiin and Independents and one each to the Worker's Party and the Socialist party. Fianna Fail say that they are picking up seats all over the country and expect to hold their own in Dublin. The party lost 80 seats in the last local elections. Labour, who did particularly well last time out, say that they expect to hold their own while Fine Gael say that they expect to make gains but will fall short of their target of 300. Meanwhile, the referendum has been carried in two areas: in Monaghan, 76.8% have voted in favour, and 23.4% against and preliminary figures for two of Dublin's electoral areas show the referendum being carried by about 80%. http://www.rte.ie/news/1999/0612/1News/1News1A.ram LITTLE CHANGE IN EURO SEATS --------------------------------------------------------------- Early indications suggest little change in 12 of the 15 European parliament seats. In Leinster, the two outgoing Fianna Fail MEPs Jim Fitzsimons and Liam Hyland will comfortably retain their seats. Avril Doyle will take a seat for Fine Gael while there will be battle for the last seat between outgoing Fine Gael MEP Alan Gillis and Nuala Ahern of the Green Party. Final tally figures for the Euro election in Dublin suggest that Green Party MEP Patricia McKenna will retain her seat. In Munster, Fianna Fail's Brian Crowley is heading the poll with the two Fine Gael candidates, Jim Corr and outgoing MEP, John Cushnahan contesting a seat. It appears that there will be no change in Connaught Ulster. THREE HELD IN CONNECTION WITH FINN DISAPPEARANCE --------------------------------------------------------------- Gardam have arrested three men in Dublin in connection with the disappearance of Karen Finn, the 14-year-old Kildare girl who went missing last Monday. The three who are aged 18, 22 and 31, were detained after Gardai raided a flat on the Northside of the city. The girl who has severe hearing and speech difficulties, went missing after she got off a train at Heuston Station in Dublin but was found safe and well in the city centre on Thursday. http://www.rte.ie/news/1999/0612/1News/1News4A.ram Ireland's Weather Mostly dry this evening with further breaks in cloud.
