ISRAEL CLOSES FOUR SCHOOLS Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source - law@lawsociety.org Mon May 31 05:23:47 1999 ISRAEL CLOSES FOUR SCHOOLS: 2,250 STUDENTS UNABLE TO SIT FINAL EXAMS 27 May, 1999 On 27 May 1999, Israeli occupation forces sealed off 4 Palestinian educational establishments in Dahiet Al Barid, north of Jerusalem, for one day. Israeli military officials claim that students have been involved in stone-throwing at soldiers. The schools' administrations received one-day closure orders and warnings of a further two-month closure should student disturbances reoccur. The four schools are the Husni Al Ashhab (1,100 students), Al Umma Basic (500 students), Al Umma Secondary (400 students) and Al Umma College (200 students). The Israeli military had detained three students from the above schools - Haitham Aza'tari (Grade 9), Abdil Kariim Arishq (Grade 9) and Abdil Razeq Abu Khalil (grade 10) - a week ago, again for throwing stones. An accusation they and their classmates all deny. LAW strongly denounces the closure of the schools and the detention of the three students. Any incident requires investigation, charge and trial, a process that the Israeli military have obviated. Moreover, the closure of schools, institutions or areas for the actions of individuals is a violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
