The department says the Indonesian military has supplied weapons to, and encouraged, pro-integrationist militias in East Timor. Hugh White, from the Defence Department, says Australia has expressed concern at a very high level to the Indonesian Government about elements of the military providing arms to the militias. "We believe that Indonesia armed forces have been actively engaged in support and encouraging the pro-integration movements and that has contributed significantly to the security problems in E Timor," he said.
