The second meeting for the year concluded with the unanimous adoption of two landmark decisions. Firstly, an Extraordinary Session of the committee dedicated solely to weapons disposal to be held in July. Secondly, the preparation of a draft plan for weapons disposal is to be entrusted to the United Nations Office on Bougainville. The extraordinary session will be characterised by adherence to Melanesian cultural practice, conducive to give-and-take and to consensus agreements on arms disposal. Reconciliation will be the co-ordinating theme, at which a number of distinguished Bougainvilleans will be invited to speak. The PPCC has entrusted the UN to draft a plan in close consultation with all parties. The committee endorsed a set of guiding principles as the basis of the approach to the arms disposal exercise based on the outcomes and recommendations from the technical group meeting three weeks ago. Plan drafting will start right away, and a first draft be ready for the July session. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytpac-06.09.99-22:26:34-2735
