Bougainville Elections Results Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source - VIKKI@law.uts.edu.au Tue May 18 23:33:42 1999 Postcourier - 19 May 99 Sinato and Kabui declared winners in Bougainville elections CO-CHAIRMAN of the Bougainville Constituent Assembly Gerard Sinato and rebel strongman Andrew Miriki were among winners of Bougainville elections declared at the weekend. They were two of 69 people declared winners and will be members of the Bougainville Reconciliation Government. Rebel leader Joseph Kabui was elected unopposed for the Eivo constituency in Central Bougainville. All the 69 new members of the Bougainville Reconciliation Government will be sworn into office later this week, spokesman for the BRG election committee, Peter Sohia, said yesterday. A surprise loser was former deputy BTG premier Thomas Anis. Mr Anis had contested the Haku 3 constituency but he was not the Leitana Council of Chiefs' choice. Mr Sohia said the period of election through the counting of votes over the weekend has been very peaceful.
