Terror campaign continues unabated in E Timor Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source - "John M. Miller" 9:06 pm AEST June 8 1999 Terror campaign continues unabated in E Timor AAP -- The terror campaign in the south west corner of East Timor, 97 kilometres from the Capital, Dili, is continuing unabated, with local residents reporting rapes, killings and beatings by local pro-Indonesian militia. Reports received from Catholic Church sources in the area told AAP at the weekend how militia members themselves had reported a killing field 18 kilometres west of Suai in the village of Salele. The unnamed militia source said that between 400 and 500 pro-independence supporters had been killed throughout February, March and April. Those killed at the site behind Salele were brought to the remote place by pro-Indonesian militia to be killed and their bodies dumped in lakes called Komu Oan and Kolam Sahena. "Some were from the mountains, some were from Dili and some were from Betun, a nearby town,"said the Catholic Church source. "The relatives don't come here, they don't know this is where those who have disappeared were killed. "They put the bodies in the lakes. There are a lot of crocodiles in those lakes, which is probably why they chose that site." Militia posts and roadblocks are still manned throughout the area, which straddles the main road out of Suai heading towards the West Timor border.
