UN launches information campaign in East Timor Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source - "Sharon R.A. Scharfe" Australian Broadcasting Corporation Tuesday 8 June, 1999 UN launches information campaign in East Timor The United Nations mission in East Timor is about to launch a widespread information campaign in the province. The UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is recording a message to be broadcast in East Timor later this week. One of the biggest problems facing the United Nations in East Timor is spreading information about its mission there throughout the province's many remote towns and villages. To kick-start the UN's information campaign, Mr Annan will record an opening address in New York on Wednesday, explaining the reasons for the UN's mission in East Timor. Using Indonesian radio and television stations, the UN will broadcast information segments throughout East Timor in English, Portuguese, Bahasa Indonesia, and Tetum, East Timor's local tongue. More remote ares in the province will be serviced by UN volunteers carrying leaflets to outlying villages.
