Miller" AN: Xanana Appeals To Jimmy Carter On Human Rights Antara East Timor's Gusmao Appeals To Jimmy Carter On Human Rights JAKARTA, June 9 Asia Pulse - Jailed East Timorese independence leader Jose Alexander "Xanana" Gusmao has asked former US President Jimmy Carter to pay attention to matters relating to human rights in East Timor. Xanana told reporters after Carter paid him a visit at his special detention house in Central Jakarta that he made the request because Carter was widely known as an international defender of human rights. "I also asked him to monitor human rights abuses in East Timor," he said. He added that Carter also expressed satisfaction on the general election process in Indonesia and he hoped the ballot in East Timor would be fair and democratic. On the same occasion, Xanana's lawyer Hendardi said Carter also asked about the number of Indonesian troops and UN officers deployed in the former Portuguese territory. Hendardi said it was an ordinary meeting during Carter's stay in Indonesia. Meanwhile, after the 50 minute meeting with Xanana, Carter refused to comment to dozens foreign and local reporters who had arrived there 20 minutes earlier.
