Khaldun May, 1999 Greetings Supporters : On 5/24/99, the staff at this facility (Maximum Control Facility in Westville, IN) locked down the entire unit. Acting Superintendent Mark Levenhagen ordered the facility locked down because of an alleged escape attempt on C-Pod, a section of the unit. We were never officially notified of the lockdown. Our visits have been cut off, as well as phone calls, and access to the law library has been denied. After two weeks of nearly total isolation from the outside, we have yet to be advised of the duration of this lockdown, or when we will be allowed to see our families. This policy stands in violation of the mandated out-of-cell recreation for two hours every day. Our loved ones are being arbitrarily punished by being denied their customary visits every 14 days. We have heard rumors of the possibility of this lockdown lasting in excess of ninety days! Our hunger strike in March set out to expose the violations occurring on a daily basis here. Although there have been some minute improvements as a result of this action, as a whole the place is still in rapid decline. Staff shortages have been endemic here for some time, and the rationale for the 90 day lockdown is that they continue to lose staff. The administration here continues to allow open tampering with my mail, which is now my only tenuous connection with the outside. I am taking this opportunity through my outside connections to thank all of those who have taken the time to write letters in support of my appeals process challenge. I will be updating all on these issue as I myself learn of the results. On 6/7/99, the MCF staff, with outside assistance from pigs from the Indiana State Prison and Westville Correctional center entered the unit I am on. They searched our cells from top to bottom. They confiscated all my books on or about George Jackson, and books on psychology. This was a blatant attempt by the state to show who is in control. They were at least 50 pigs deep and did what they could to provoke us into confrontation. Something has to open up here where we can expose each violation. Finally, I am hoping for a trial this July 27, 1999, so that all this may be put behind me. The struggle will continue regardless. Please take care and stay strong. IN STIFF RESISTANCE Bro.
