Act today to prevent 200,000 people from losing WIC benefits Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source - Ted Steege UUSC PROMISE THE CHILDREN LEGISLATIVE UPDATE Thursday, May 13, 1999 ACT TODAY TO PREVENT 200,000 PEOPLE FROM LOSING WIC BENEFITS A House subcommittee may vote today for a level of funding that would deprive up to 200,000 mothers and children of food and nutritional help they need under the WIC program. Your quick word to subcommittee members can help save those families. The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture meets today to mark up the Fiscal Year 2000 agricultural appropriations bill, which includes funding for the special nutritional supplement for Women, Infants and Children, known as "WIC." Some reports indicate that the Subcommitee may fund WIC at a level that would serve 200,000 fewer women, infants and children. WIC supporters back the President's request of just over $4.1 billion ($4,105,000), but the subcommittee's funding allocation under the FY 2000 budget resolution may not allow an appropriation that high. Please CONTACT MEMBERS OF THE SUBCOMMITTEE IMMEDIATELY. * Urge them to provide at least enough funding to serve 7.4 million people, the participation level projected for FY 1999. * Tell members that a freeze in WIC would prevent 200,000 mothers, infants, and children from being served next year. Members of the Subcommittee include the following representatives: Joe Skeen, Chairperson (R-2nd NM) Jim Walsh (R-25th NY) Henry Bonilla (R-23rd TX) Jay Dickey (R-4th AR) Jack Kingston (R-1st GA) George R. Nethercutt, Jr. (R-5th WA) Tom Latham (R-5th IA) Jo Ann Emerson (R-8th MO) Marcy Kaptur (D-9th OH) Rosa DeLauro (D-3rd CT) Maurice Hinchey (D-26th NY) Sam Farr (D-17th CA) F.
