We will learn more about Mumia's case and what it will take to win justice. We will gain valuable experience to bring back to wherever we come from. Mumia Abu-Jamal was a freedom fighter at age 15. His writing exposed police brutality, the oppression of people of color, and the attacks on the poor. But, while he was hailed as "the Voice of the Voiceless," many government officials saw his writing as dangerous. In 1981, Abu-Jamal was charged with killing a police officer. In the controversial trial that followed, the prosecution sought the death penalty - even arguing that because he had been a member of the Black Panther Party as a youth, Mumia had clearly been waiting all these years to kill a cop! In fact, several witnesses pinpointed a different man as the shooter - many of whom have come forward to reveal that police used threats to keep them from telling what they really saw that night during the 1982 trial. To this day, despite a growing body of evidence in his favor, Mumia remains on death row. On October 29, 1998, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court unanimously denied Mumia a new trial. His case is headed for a showdown in federal court by the end of this year. Now is the time to build the movement for justice for Mumia. In the summer of 1964, hundreds of youth traveled to Mississippi Freedom Summer, to confront the brutal racism Black people faced in the Deep South. Today, the stage is set for one of the most important political battles of our generation - to stop the execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal. The heart of it all is in Philly - the site of the 1985 MOVE bombing, the notorious 39th district police scandals, the city that sets records for seeking the death penalty against Black defendants. Just as the summer of '64 would influence the political climate for decades to come, the fate of Mumia Abu-Jamal will shape the way this country runs far into the future. This battle will set national precedents for or against speedier executions, legally sanctioned discrimination against poor people and people of color, and punishment by death for political dissent. The NYC Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition in conjunction with the International Concerned Family & Friends of Mumia joins with Herman Ferguson, Yuri Kochiyama, Ani Difranco, Grace Paley, Dennis Brutus, Fred Ho, Dave Dellinger, Rafael Cancel Miranda, Connie Hogarth, Toshi & Pete Seeger, Liz McAlister & Phil Berrigan, Mandy Carter, Barbara Ehrenreich, Manning Marable and many others in calling for a Mass Nonviolent Civil Disobedience Action at the Liberty Bell Philadelphia, PA SATURDAY, JULY 3 along with a simultaneous July 3 support vigil and a huge July 4 Legal March thru Philly and Rally at the Liberty Bell In 1995, with only 10 days left before his scheduled execution, the international movement for Mumia Abu Jamal's liberation stopped the state from killing him. Once again, the movement to save Mumia's life has reached a critical juncture. Chief defense lawyer Leonard Weinglass has stated clearly that Mumia's federal appeals, while not exhausted, cannot be relied upon to stop an execution. History has shown repeatedly-in the movements for women's suffrage, civil rights, an end to the Vietnam war, AIDS care, workers' rights and police accountability-civil disobedience has forced those in power to respond to the people's demands for justice. The time has come for us to escalate our resistance. Mumia needs you! Call to get more info and/or get involved! Overnight sleeping space and buses available.
