Argentina-First Regional Conf. on Sexual Identity Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit source - escrita@arnet.com.ar Thu Jun 10 20:07:28 1999 De: Alejandra Sarda Fecha: Jueves, 10 de Junio de 1999 12:28 p.m. News from ALITT - Fight for Transvestite Identity Association (*) 1st Regional Conference on Sexual Identity - Parana, Argentina Last June 5-6 in the city of Parana, Entre Rios province (in the Argentinean Northeast), two local organizations - DEPIS (Sexual Identity Delegation of Parana) and IMCAP (Integrated Women Street Sex Workers of Parana)- organized the Conference, that took place in a cultural center named after the province's most famous poet, Juan L. Ortiz. Special guests were Lohana Berkins, from ALITT, and Paula Rodriguez, transvestite activist unaffiliated with any organization, two of the most prominent leaders of the trans movement in Buenos Aires. The Conference started on Saturday 5 with a press conference and got a wide coverage in the local media (newspapers, TV, etc.). In the night, dinner was hosted by INCAP's President, Norma. On Sunday 6, activities were resumed at 1 pm with participants' registration. At 1.30 pm the round panel was opened by DEPIS' President, Deysy Ramirez, and both guests from Buenos Aires. Issues discussed were -among others: transvestite identity; history of Buenos Aires TTLGB (Transvestite, Transsexual, Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual) Organizations; networking with human rights and feminists organizations; human rights and sexual minorities. At 7 pm, the Conference was closed. The whole event was permeated with warm and enthusiastic feelings, that Lohana Berkins specially enjoyed.
