Is Cuba A Rogue State? To Monsanto, It Might Be... Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit source - JosePertierra@aol.com Toronto Star - May 9, 2002 Letter to the Editor: Is Cuba a "rogue state?" To the Monsantos it might be Re: U.S. adds to "rogue states" list (May 7): Having recently visited Cuba with a group of Canadian farmers, I would like to add some evidence to support U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton's allegations that Cuba could be pursuing weapons of mass destruction for use in biological warfare. We witnessed research being conducted on bacterial and fungal microbes not only in the laboratories of the Institutes for Research of Plant Health but also in small, rural laboratories. This research was ostensibly to help farmers to develop better microbial activity in their soil and to fight pest and plant diseases in order to produce more nutritious and healthier crops. But who knows? Perhaps U.S. President George W. Bush has figured out that research in soil bacteria and such natural pesticides as bacillus thuringiensis is just a front. After all, isn't bacteria just a fancy word for germs? How does one tell a good germ from a bad one? An offensive from a defensive one? A germ that is either for or against terrorism? Also, if the Cubans develop natural methods to deal with plant pests and diseases, what effect might this have on the Monsantos of this world? Potential economic mass destruction? In the field of medicine, we saw huge farms devoted to raising medicinal herbs and other healing plants. They were part of Cuba's ongoing research efforts to substitute natural remedies for pharmaceuticals, which Cuba can ill afford. This is another example of potential mass destruction, this time for the pharmaceutical industry. The list goes on. Cuban doctors sponsored by the Cuban government are sent to other Caribbean and South American countries to help to train other doctors and to assist in health care. Humanitarian aid or agents of germ warfare? Finally, Cuba has the motive to indulge in such activities alleged by Bolton. A large country located very near to Cuba has made several attempts on the life of Fidel Castro. Might Cuba, as a "rogue state," attempt to do the same to the president of that large country? If Bush is contemplating a possible invasion point, I would suggest the Bay of Pigs. Doug Parker Milford, Ont.
