It is "divided" only because this old Palestinian city has been INVADED, not "divided," for years by Israeli governments sending in masses of ultra-racist "settlers," in their decades-long campaign to make "facts on the ground" and preempt any peaceful possibilities for an independent Palestinian state -- NY Transfer.] Reuters via Yahoo - Sun Apr 28,11:39 PM ET ISRAELI TANKS SWEEP INTO HEBRON, KILLING 2 HEBRON (Reuters) - Dozens of Israeli tanks swept into the divided West Bank city of Hebron and opened fire with heavy machineguns early on Monday, killing two people, witnesses and Palestinian security sources said. The Israeli army said it was responding to a series of attacks it believed originated from the Hebron area, including a raid on Saturday at a nearby Jewish settlement in which a five-year-old girl and three other Israelis were killed. "The army launched an operation in the city focusing on the arrest of terrorists and searches for munitions. This operation is expected to end shortly and is not intended as a strike against the Palestinian Authority," it said in a statement. Hebron, where 400 Jewish settlers live in heavily guarded enclaves among 120,000 Palestinians, was the only major West Bank city not reoccupied during a crushing Israeli offensive that started a month ago and began winding down last week. Witnesses said tanks and armored vehicles, supported by helicopter gunships, entered Hebron from two directions before dawn. They said two people were shot dead and at least five were wounded during the incursion. Israeli forces were conducting house-to-house searches and arresting suspects, Palestinian security sources said. * Earlier Coverage of Invasion of Qalqilya: (credibility warning: this comes from Voice of America) http://www.middleeastwire.com:8080/storypage.jsp?id=5487 MiddleEastWire.com - Fri Apr 26 Israeli Forces Raid Palestinian Town of Qalqilya VOA News Israeli forces have raided the West Bank Palestinian town of Qalqilya and three nearby villages (Beita, Silt a-Dhar and Jaba'a). Witnesses say about a dozen tanks and armored personnel carriers rolled into the town and villages overnight, and that soldiers conducted house-to-house searches after imposed a curfew. The Israeli army says troops detained at least 13 Palestinians suspected of terrorist activities against Israelis. It was the second military raid on Qalqilya since Israeli forces pulled back to the outskirts of the Palestinian town on April 9. Earlier, Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip exchanged gunfire with armed Palestinians near the Egyptian border. Palestinian security officials say a Palestinian woman was killed. But it was not immediately clear if the victim was a bystander caught in the cross-fire or one of the Palestinian attackers. Thursday, nine Palestinian youths and the bodies of two Palestinians killed in an earlier gunfire were evacuated from Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity which is besieged by Israeli forces. Two Franciscan monks escorted the young people out of the church under an arrangement with the Israeli army. About 200 people, including Palestinian gunmen, have been holed-up in the Christian shrine Israeli which has been under military siege since April second. Also Thursday, a Palestinian military court in Ramallah handed out jail sentences to four Palestinian militants after convicting them of killing an Israeli cabinet minister last year. Israel dismissed the verdict from the make-shift court in the besieged compound of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says the men must be handed over to stand trial in Israel for the assassination of Tourism Minister Rehavam Zeevi in Jerusalem in October. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytact-04.28.02-23:52:01-18449
