Bosnia Traffic in Women: No Evidence of UN Police Collusion Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit [Interesting that it becomes a big story in the Washington Post only when the UN police are accused of failing to stop kidnapping and trafficking, but it's not a big story when NATO's allies in the former socialist world actually do the kidnapping and trafficking. Also note the misleading headline -- the UN police were never accused of "trafficking," but of ignoring it or failing to stop it.] UN denies trafficking in women by its police UNITED NATIONS, Dec 28--The United Nations has denied reports charging its police officers with involvement in trafficking in women in Bosnia. The charges, reported by the Washington Post newspaper, has been thoroughly investigated and found to have "no evidence," a statement by the world body on Thursday said. No international police officer had been found to be trafficking in women, it added. Charges of trafficking in women have surfaced often as prostitution is rampant in Bosnia where criminal gangs are said to allure women and then force them into this trade. Reports have said that the some UN police look the other way, inform brothels of possible raids and in some cases are actively involved in it. In the report, the Post said that the UN had quashed an investigation earlier this year into whether UN police was directly involved in the enslavement of Eastern European women in Bosnian brothels. The report said the decision to halt the investigation came when the UN mission was "reeling from disclosures that several of its police officers had been dismissed for sexual misconduct." Under the UN procedure, in case of any misconduct, the power of trial generally rests with the person's home government and the world body can only ask for a recall. David Lamb, a former Philadelphia police officer who served as a UN human rights investigator, said, within weeks, his preliminary inquiry found more than enough evidence to justify a full-scale criminal investigation.
