Tulane Cancels Enviro Conference After Visa Denials Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit AP 05/17/02 15:22 Tulane Cancels Cuba Conference NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Tulane University canceled a conference on Cuba's environment after the State Department denied travel visas to eight participants. Cuban researchers and members of Cuba's Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment and its Ministry of Tourism were expected to be among the participants in the conference, which had been set to begin on Thursday. The State Department would not comment on the Cubans' case except to cite a 1985 administrative ban on visits by Cuban government or Communist Party officials. The ban can be waived on a case-by-case basis. Eric Dannenmaier of Tulane's Institute for Environmental Law and Policy, which organized the conference, said he was dismayed at "the lost opportunity for an open dialogue about environmental policy and the role of civil society in Cuba." The cancellation came as former President Carter ended a visit to Cuba, where he urgied changes in U.S. policy toward the island country and openings toward democracy in Cuba. Copyright, 2002.
