British Guilty in Dermot McShane Case - Derry IRSP Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit source - IRSP Irish Republican Socialist Party 28 May 2002 British Guilty in Dermot McShane Case The IRSP today welcomes the European Court ruling for Mrs. Teresa McShane against the Ministry of Defence, the former chief constable of the Royal Ulster Constabulary and the Northern Ireland secretary for negligence and breach of statutory duty. Dermot McShane was a former Republican Socialist Prisoner who was murdered by the British Army. The court ruled against the government for failings in the investigation into his death. It said investigating officers were not independent of those implicated in the incident and the investigation "lacked expedition". While the court did not rule on the responsibility of the state for Dermot's death, the question still remains, if the British Government was not responsible then who was? It certainly wasn't Dermot himself. Was it the driver in a moment of madness? We will never know because the Government, in their contempt for Irish life, did not properly look into the issues surrounding the death. It is a disgrace that the soldier involved in driving the army vehicle into Dermot McShane was not properly questioned for at least six months after the killing.
