New riots erupt in northern Belfast 

BELFAST: Fresh rioting erupted on Sunday between rival gangs of
Protestant and Catholic youths in northern Belfast, police said.

They said the youths had lobbed hand-made grenades at police who
responded by firing rubber bullets at the intersection of a Catholic
district and a Protestant stronghold that has been the scene of
almost daily clashes for the past 18 months.

There were no injuries.

The riots highlight continuing sectarian tensions between Northern
Ireland's two communities -- Protestant loyalists who want to
maintain British rule and Catholic nationalists who want a united
Ireland.
