A 23-Minute History of Cuba Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit source - "Steve Wilkinson" News release - 24th January 2002 The story of Cuba in 23 minutes! Condensing 500 years of a nation's history into less than half-an-hour is no mean feat. But that is what film-maker Emily James has done with the history of the rebellious island of Cuba. A Brief History of Cuba in d minor is a delightful musical romp through the past of this island nation in just 23 minutes. And the film will have a special screening for Cuba lovers on Valentine's Saturday night February 16th when it will be screened in glorious 16mm with stero sound as part of the I Love Cuba Cabaret fund-raiser organised by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign. The film combines cabaret style performances of song and dance, 'newsreels' constructed from archive, and illustrations into a complex but wildly entertaining narrative. Originally from California, Emily has recently completed the Documentary Direction Course at the English National Film and Television School. She combines her interests in philosophy and film language with a wry sense of humour and just a little more than a pinch of irony. Also on the bill at the cabaret is world renowned classical guitarist John Williams comedians Jeremy Hardy, Linda Smith, and poet John Hegley. Authentic Cuban twelve piece Salsa band, Raices Cubanas, will provide the rhythms for the night and will be playing a late set for the salsa dancing night owls. Authentic Cuban cocktails (Bar open until 2am) and vegetarian food will be served. Tickets are £18 in advance or £20 on the door. Entry after 11pm for the salsa part of the evening only will be £10.
