Americans pessimitic about war against terrorism Via NY Transfer News * All the News That Doesn't Fit [So the yankees are pessimistic. Can't imagine why. Can it be that even the US public is alarmed to discover what they have given the cookie jar to a complete half-wit and his criminal handlers?] The Times of India - May 31, 2002 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow.asp?art_ID=11539790 Americans pessimitic about war against terrorism NEW YORK, May 31 (PTI)--Americans are increasingly pessimistic about the war against terrorism following revelations about intelligence failure on warnings of terror attacks. Only four in 10 Americans believe the US and its allies are winning the war against terrorism, according to a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll. In January, when headlines focussed on military successes on the battlefield in Afghanistan, two-thirds of those polled felt the nation was winning the war. The number has declined steadily since. Now, 35 per cent say neither side is winning the war, and 15 per cent say the terrorists are winning, the survey reported by the USA Today said. The numbers aren't surprising given that Americans have been "beaten over the head" with warnings in recent weeks, Frank Newport, editor-in-chief of The Gallup poll said. Analysts say public opinion also has been influenced by reports of intelligence failures before September 11. "If you add all of the attention given to the failures of the FBI and intelligence communities prior to September 11, it's no wonder the public doesn't feel as if we're winning this war," Mann said. Despite the growing pessimism, President Bush's job approval rating remained steady at 77 per cent. "It's not that Americans are suddenly saying Bush has failed. It's that people are being reminded that there's this gigantic problem of terrorism out there," Newport says. ================================================================= NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us 339 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10012 http://www.blythe.org e-mail: nyt@blythe.org ================================================================= nytmid-06.01.02-07:06:23-30098
